| GR Elite | Re: Taning salons? I use tanning beds and think they are therapeutic. I am very fair skinned and before I started using them, I always got sunburned outdoors. I believe that vitamin D deficiency is much, much more dangerous than a tan. It doesn’t make sense that as a species we evolved in the sunshine, but now we have to live like vampires.

| GR Elite | Re: Tanning salons? yeh they dont sound too healthy ...all these warnings about them . I suppose I'd rather just tan under the sun itself if Im going to . 'fake spray on tan ' salons are popular ... getting it done for you is a better and even result and it comes in handy if u need to be 'sunkissed' for a dress ur gonna wear at some function . However you can't be shy , as most require u to stand there mostly naked :P lol I'm just thinking of some other beauty treatments women go thru that are To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. Researchers now know vitamin D deficiency is dangerous. There are several diseases connected to vitamin D deficiency such as breast cancer, colon cancer and osteoporosis. Ever wonder why American women suffer disproportionately to the rest of the first world in both breast cancer and osteoporosis rates? It’s because we have an epidemic of vitamin D deficiency from being scared senseless about skin cancer. Did you know that cases of rickets in children are increasing dramatically because children are not allowed to go outside without sunscreen? We are doing harm to ourselves because when it comes to the medicine and cosmetics, we check our brains at the door. How many times has the medical establishment told us to do something for our health then turned around and said, “Oh, wait, don’t do that,” without even an apology? OK. I didn’t mean for this to turn into a rant, but it doesn’t make sense. You can’t only take care of one part of your body and ignore the rest. Like Aristotle said, “Pan metron ariston.”

| GR Untouchable | Re: Tanning salons? I have read that about the Vitamin D. I think you're better off in the sun then a tanning bed though. Those things remind me of rotisseirie chicken. But true too on the sprays and their chemicals being absorbed into your skin. I think the sun in moderation is probably best. The difference now with the sun versus the past is the sun is hotter and more damaging because of the ozone? Something like that. I used to roast myself out in the sun, forget any SPF, i went right for the baby oil, lol I did this every summer. I did wind up having a form of a skin cancer. I'll never know if this was the reason or not, but now I can no longer run around with my skin unprotected. I don't mind cause I don't want premature wrinkling either. So now I'll just have to go for the ghostly Goth look, lol |

I absolutely agree that natural sunlight is the best. But as I said earlier, I could never go out into the sun without awful sunburns (which causes the most damage). But after I started using the tanning beds in the beginning of the season, I had a nice glow which protected me from burning. But you can’t bake for hours at a time. With no tan, I have to start out at 2 minutes and gradually build up to about 8 minutes maximum. I too baby oiled. (God were we stupid!) Anything to look good. Lol. But that’s just it. It’s the fear of wrinkling more than the fear of cancer that is fueling the cosmetics industry’s push of sunscreen. Even if you don’t want to use tanning beds, everyone needs to be exposed to sunlight everyday, even for just a few minutes. And the darker you are the more sunlight exposure you need. I’m sorry about your bout with skin cancer and certainly wish a long healthy life.

| GR Untouchable | Re: Tanning salons? Yeah I was trying to be cute with the oil. Ok so you're saying you getting a base tan so you don't burn. Yes too on sunscreens being pushed for avoiding the wrinkles. Just read about wearing gloss without sunscreen underneath or in it is no good. I agree you need some sun. Thank you. The scariest thing with that is that I had it for 15 years or so before they finally diagnosed it. Apparently I had been walking around with it all that time. It's a rare form called a sarcoma. So now I tell everyone I can not to ignore things on their skin even if it's been there for a long time! Even though I did not ignore this, the doctors just never bothered to biopsy it before. |

There are so many harmful chemicals being used not just in cosmetics , but in the foods we consume too , and they get away with it !
