Re: Beijing 2008

I watched the whole opening ceremony. It was truly an amazing ceremony, heavily influenced by the Athens 2004 opening ceremony.

Re: Beijing 2008

The opening ceremony was pretty good...but nothing beats the ones in Athens....those were the BEST ever....you can see the influence of the ones in 2004 in the 2008 opening ceremony.

Re: Beijing 2008

I really liked the Athens Opening Ceremony also. I think the commonality with both Athens and Beijing is that the organizers had to showcase only a few elements of a very long history and civilization in a short period of time, make it modern so as not to bore people, make it understandable through visuals for people who are not familiar with it, within the limitations and guidelines imposed by the International Olympic Committee.

I read in an article somewhere that the Greek Ceremony put emphasis on love and water (i.e. the sea), while the Chinese Ceremony put emphasis on peace and harmony. If I remember well, it was a Greek personality who said that after the Opening Ceremony. If I find back the article, I will post it here.

Here is an article about Zhang Yimou, the director of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the Beijing Olympics and ParaOlympics (to be held in September). He refers to the "influence" of the 2004 Athens Opening Ceremony. Interesting read.

Another thing I noticed is that the Greek ceremony emphasized on emotio/sentiment, something that Greek people are characterized of, while the Chinese one emphasized more on discipline and synchronization.

Re: Beijing 2008

Did anyone see London’s presentation at the closing ceremony last night? To quote my teenagers, “That was gay.”

They are very observant and on the point. According to UK newspapers, the British show was to bring the British humour, fun and youth to an otherwise joyless and boring ceremony or something like that.

Re: Beijing 2008

Yeah, well, California teens don’t usually mean "happy" when they say something is “gay”.

A very noble gesture, considering that he comes from a poor country. Usain Bolt donates $50,000 to the children of the Sichuan earthquake. That must be a big chunk of what the Jamaican government gives to him for his gold medals (I think).

Watch Beijing Paralympics Opening Ceremony live. I missed the beginning, just found out this link as there is nothing on TV.

Re: Beijing 2008

It was very moving to see the athletes' torch relay in the Bird's Nest and the athlete lighting the torch.
