Greece spends more money to make friends

Aftert Greece's purchase of 15 French Mirage fighter jets, as a thanks to France's support at the Bucharest Summit, this week the Greek Government in a bid to lure countries who weren't on its side, by purchasing military equipment from factories in Germany, Spain and Italy.

The plan, according to diplomatic sources is to raise Greece's defense budget to 8 billion euros in order to make the extra purchases.

Immediately after the Summit, Greek Government insisted on contracts with France. Athens created a 'public' tender to purchase 15 fighter jets. American company Boeing bidded on it, not knowing Greece had already signed a deal with France.

According to the new plan, Greece would purchase a submarine, and navy speed boats.

Diplomatic sources confirm Greece would do just about anything and spend any amount to make friends and get countries on their side.

Athens plans to spend around 27 billion euros from 2006-2015, and has drawn the ire of the European Union for excessive military spending.
