| GR Elite | Re: FYROM disgraces Greek flag Ironic since many people from there are Bulgarian. Bulgarians fought with the Nazis against Greece. Greece can use this now to to throw it right back at them as yet another form of historical distortion. I consider FYROM a total enemy of Hellas right up their with Turkey and Albania. Any flag desecration comes as no suprise. Also note that they desecrated the Christian Cross of the Greek flag too. Those muslim albanians living there have started to rub off on them.

| Admins | Re: FYROM disgraces Greek flag I guess Atanas Botev is the one who organizes this exhbitition - or whatever it is - advertised by this board. His name is Greek (coming from Αθάνας/Αθανάσιος). No surprise if he is one of the Greek children sent to Skopia in the 40s or a descedant of them. Except the Slavs that were banished to Skopia during the Greek civil war (like the family which is showed in the board) they were a lot of Greek babies sent to Skopia too. The babies of Macedonian communist families who sent them to Yugoslavia in order to save them from the Greek nationalists and make them a reinforcement to the Yugoslavian communist regime. Some of them are members of the current Skopian government. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: FYROM disgraces Greek flag Ooox ti oraia na tous pane tora giati xeroune otoi tha fane ena kalo veto apo tin Ellada (makari).. FYROM Explains 'Offensive' Greek Flag 31 March 2008 Skopje _ Macedonia’s Government has distanced itself from billboards depicting the Greek flag with a swastika which has caused outcry in Greece. “We would like to distance ourselves from any visual symbols or rhetorical messages that have an offensive connotation,” the Government’s press service said in a statement on Monday, noting that the billboards are part of a private exhibition. The billboards promoting the art exhibition, display Greek flags with a swastika replacing the white cross. The Government has already told the Greek Ambassador to Skopje that the country is committed to building good neighbourly and European relations with Athens. The billboards have caused an outcry in Greece, where television stations relayed images of the posters to audiences. “It directly offends the national symbol of our country and our fight against fascism and Nazism,” Greek Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Jorgos Koumoutsakos told media on Sunday. He added that Athens will send a stern protest to the Macedonian Foreign Ministry and call for the removal of the billboards. “This incident shows that those who invest in chauvinism and fanaticism are making a big mistake, and confirms the correctness of the Greek stance, concretely, that in order to create relations of solidarity, practices of good neighbourly relations between the countries and people need to be respected,” he said. Some Macedonian media also condemned the billboards. “Someone is obviously trying to spark national hatred,” commented Monday’s edition of Vecer. Skopje and Athens are engaged in a long running dispute over the name ‘Macedonia.’ Athens objects to Skopje’s use of its constitutional name “Republic of Macedonia” as Greece argues that it could lead Skopje to make territorial claims over its own northern province which is also called Macedonia. Greece has threatened to veto Macedonia’s bid to receive an invitation to join NATO at the alliance's Bucharest Summit which gets underway on April 2 Code:

| GR Rookie | Re: FYROM disgraces Greek flag I don't think these acts are supported by most of the people in fyrom. I think that if it wasn't for American support fyrom would of compromised on the name. fyrom is depending on American support for its accession to NATO. Let's hope that Greece can stand firm and frustrate the NATO members mainly the USA and leave them no choice but to pressure fyrom to compromise. It will be terrible if fyrom is allowed to join NATO under the name fyrom. Now is the ideal time for a solution. Republic of New Macedonia sounds reasonable. |

| Super Moderator ![]() | Re: FYROM disgraces Greek flag Jewish community slams flag insult The historic Jewish community of Thessaloniki on Thursday issued a statement sharply condemning the recent defacing of the Greek flag in billboards put up in the city of Skopje -- the white Cross on the flag was replaced with a Swastika -- as well as a local magazine's caricature of Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis' dressed as an SS officer. "The defacing of the national symbol and the attempt to depict the Greek prime minister to a Nazi officer constitute unacceptable actions and an insult to the Greek people as a whole including members of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki," the statement reads, days after the billboard posters appeared -- and subsequently disappeared -- in the capital of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). The statement adds that these actions become more heinous because Greece was among the first countries in Europe to clash with the tide fascism and the first to defeat Axis Forces on the battlefield in WWII, referring to the Albanian front (1940-1941), "where Jewish and Christian Greeks fought side by side." "Furthermore, the use -- for the sake of creating impressions -- of symbols that are directly linked with the period of the worst crimes committed against humanity is an insult to the memory of the six million victims of the Holocaust and those who survived the horror of the Nazi concentration camps," the statement reads. "Our Community welcomes the stance adopted by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, a descendant of the Mallah family from Thessaloniki, who backed Greece's positions on the self-evident Greekness of Macedonia," the statement concludes.
