Martin Bernal

Martin Bernal is a black afro centrist and an author of this funny and insulting book called Black Athena. Basically because blacks have a very primitive history and really have not contributed much to the world some of them decide to steal Hellenic history and try to make it their own. The problem with that is that they teach in universities and schools brainwashing young minds. Basically its a crime trying to discredit Greeks. What are they going to come up with next? Have you done anything to let your voice be heard that enough is enough with these insults? It seems everyone wants a piece of our Hellenic ancestry.


In his book Black Athena he is claiming that the Ancient Greeks were not the creators of philosophy, democracy and science. He also claims that Socrates and Cleopatra were African decent. To top it all he makes more pseudo claims that the Greeks stole philosophy from Egypt and that Aristotle robbed the library of Alexandria! This is actually being taught in schools and universities. When historians and authors asked him for his proof he really didn't have any.

1: Did Aristotle raid the library at Alexandria?

No ancient source says that Alexander and Aristotle raided the Library at Alexandria. That they do not do so is not surprising, because it is unlikely that Aristotle ever went there. Aristotle was Alexander's tutor when Alexander was young, but he did not accompany him on his military campaign. Even if he had gone there, it is hard to see how he could have stolen books from the library in Alexandria. Although Alexandria was founded in 331 BC, it did not begin to function as a city until after 323. Aristotle died in 322. The library was assembled around 297 under the direction of Demetrius of Phaleron, a pupil of Aristotle's. Most of the books it contained were in Greek.

2: Socrates was black.

Never in any historians books was Socrates mentioned to be black, he is a pure Athenian. Second of all Athenians were very racially aware of their origins. As a matter of fact they considered any one who was non Greek a barbarian they even considered other Greek tribes barbarians as well. Aristophanes or any other Greek writer have never mentioned anywhere that Socrates was black. So does that really make sense that Socrates was black? I definately didn't think so. If you think that you really need to have your head examined. History can not be changed, history is permanent.

3: Cleopatra was a Greek from Macedonia.

Her ancestors were the Ptolemies, that were descended from one of Alexander the Greats generals. The name Cleopatra was only given to women in the royal family. She was actually Cleopatra the VII , daughter of Ptolemy the XII. Cleopatra definately followed Greek tradition of only marrying within the family it has been recorded in history. If you read about Cleopatra from contemporary sources you will see the truth. Obviously these afro centrists don't want to hear that and you will definately be labeled a racist immediately.

4: Did the Greeks steal history from the Egyptians?

For awhile individuals who specialized in linguistics, anthropology and history could not read Egyptian hieroglyphics the official system of Egyptian writing. Till they learned how, scholars had to rely only on Greek sources to understand Egyptian history and civilization. Before that Classical scholars tended to be skeptical on the claims of Greek historians. They thought that the ancient historians knew that certain Greek religious customs and philosophical interests derived from Egypt as well.
But two major discoveries changed everything that they believed in about Ancient Greeks. First one concerned a group of ancient philosophical treatises attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, these had throughout the Middle Ages and into Renaissance been thought of as Egyptian and early. But in 1614 the French scholar Isaace Casaubon demonstrated that the treatises were actually late and Greek. The second discovery was the decipherment of hieroglyphics, completed by 1836. It finally became clear to them that the relation between Ancient Greeks and Egyptians was less close then they have originally imagined. Egyptian belonged to the Asiatic language family, while the Greek was an indo European language like Latin.

In conclusion, European scholars realized that they could no longer take at face value what Herodotus, Diodorus and the Church fathers had to say about Greece's to Egypt. Once it became possible to read Egyptian religious documents, and to see how the Egyptians themselves described their gods and told their myths, scholars saw that the Ancient Greeks accounts of Egyptian religion were much different and misleading. Greek writers, despite their great respect for Egyptian religion looked at their civilization with much confusion that kept them from understanding any practices or customs that were significantly different from their own. The result was a portrait of Egypt that was both astigmatic and deeply Hellenized. Greek writers could not read Egyptian inscriptions or question a variety of witnesses because they obviously did not know the language.

5: Afro centrists also claim that Plato studied in Egypt.

Never was it mentioned in Plato's literature that he did such a thing. In some of his writing he refers to some Egyptian myths and customs, along with very little chronology, which is more historical fiction than of real history. Also Plato was not a historian, and rather had superficial knowledge of Egypt. In fact any visits that Plato supposedly made to Egypt only came up much after the Hellenistic period. Authors dating from the fourth century and earlier, ancient biographers were compelled to use as their principal source material the author's own works. Much later biographers added details to the story of Plato's Egyptian travels in order to provide etiologies for the Egyptian reference in his writing. A good example of an etiology is well preserved by Clement of Alexandria, Plato studied in Egypt with Hermes the Trismegistus. That ridiculous it is simply stating that Plato studied with himself after his death! Hermes works could not have been written without the conceptual vocabulary developed by Plato and Aristotle, and its deeply influenced not just by Plato, but by the writings of Neo-Platonist philosophers in early centuries A.D. Who ever these teachers were Plato never really learned anything from them, and his notion for Egyptians was very similar to other Athenians.

Two other works have been written refuting Bernal's claims. The first, Not Out of Africa by Mary R. Lefkowitz easily discredits Black Athena. More recently, Black Athena Revisited, Edited by Mary R. Lefkowitz and Guy MacLean Rogers, offers over 500 pages of proof written by numerous scholars against "Afrocentrist" claims of the black creation of civilization.

A great Greek anthropologist by the name of Dienekes Pontikos has proven that Greeks are actually pure white and even more white than all the of the other Europeans not to mention he has proven that most Greeks are pure 100 percent the same as the Ancient Greeks. It's mazing after 400 years of Ottoman rule we remained the same as before. Just look at this link:

Greeks are not the same as western europeans. We are a unique people. I dont care much about being white because we are our own white type of people. Greeks are different people.

That would be good I like Pontikos work. He is obviously a very intelligent individual when it comes down to anthropology. It would also be good for educational purposes. I believe this forum should be a good place for people to learn the truth about our history and at the same time to help preserve our culture.
