Greece Puts In Claim To Constantinople (NYT article, 1919)

New York Times article from Feb. 4th, 1919.

For those who may not know, Greece battled on the side of the victorious Allies in World War I and against the Central Powers (which included the Ottoman Empire).

Had Greece been able to realize this claim to the city after the war, then Constantinople would today be the capital of Greece, not Athens.

Very true Greece almost had most of her lands but unfortunately things did not work out that way in the end. I think we can thank the great powers for that. I had written articles on 1919 a couple of years ago and posted them here:

Re: Greece Puts In Claim To Constantinople (NYT article, 1919)

Thank you for the link Prokomenos. I'm looking forward to reading through them.

Yes, the history of post-WWI is one of betrayal against Greece by Italy, France, United States and England. I remember reading how the Italians were training Turk rebels in machine gun use (and supplying them with such) behind our backs. Italy especially did not want Greece gaining control of the rich oil fields in Asia Minor (because then we could possibly have become be "Great Power").

England screwed Greece over left and right. Never missed an opportunity. But we should remember that there are good men among them. There were always powerful men in England who loved Greece. It's just a shame they could not control their dishonorable government.

The U.S. government betrayed Greece in 1955 by not taking real action against Turkey for the government-sanctioned riots in Constantinople against the 200,000 Greeks still living there; their plotting of the Cypress invasion (the ultimate betrayal, unforgivable); and still with the FYROM naming issue (and other things). The controlled mass media here has continually deceived the public. Especially with news and movies.

Re: Greece Puts In Claim To Constantinople (NYT article, 1919)

In 1919 many things were different. The mistakes of the Greek politicians and the policies of what was being called "he big powers" lead to the Asia Minor catastrophe. Today we are more than 80 years after it and the truth is that Constantinople/Istanbul is a city of 15 million of whom less than 5,000 keep Greek identity.

According to the encyclopedia:

There are 11,372,613 residents in Constantinople. (

There are 123 active Christian Churches (I find this very hard to believe). (

Greek community numbers about 5,000, mostly older, Greeks. (

Constantinople will be Greek again one day. It may be 500 years from now or 100 years, but it will be Greek again. It is the Sacred Destiny.
