ATHENS (AFP) — Greece is to impose a smoking ban in public places, the health ministry announced Wednesday, after previous partial-bans were ignored in what is one of Europe's heaviest smoking nations.
Two previous laws, forcing businesses, bars and restaurants to limit smoking to designated areas, were widely flouted.
The new total ban, which will also include a provision to raise the tobacco-purchasing age to 18, will be presented to the Greek parliament in June.
Around one in three 12-18 year olds have tried smoking, whilst one in ten is addicted, according to a 2007 survey.
The number of smokers in Greece has gone up ten percent in ten years, it also found, whilst many other developed nations are cutting back on cigarette smoking.
Britain, Ireland and France have already banned smoking in public places. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. |

Mind you though I still think people should have the option to smoke in public places if they wish to. They should just designate smoking and no smoking zones. |

Mind you though I still think people should have the option to smoke in public places if they wish to. They should just designate smoking and no smoking zones. | It’s very difficult to separate an enclosed space into both smoking and non-smoking zones. I remember when the restaurants here were like that and it never really worked. I don’t think it is unreasonable to ban smoking in enclosed public spaces such as office buildings and restaurants.
Although I have never smoked, I do sympathize with smokers. They shouldn’t be treated like pariahs if they are considerate of non-smokers. There are places here in California where you can’t even smoke outside. That’s taking it to an absurd level.

I am however against a ban for public open air areas!! |

I think its only fair and people who smoke should have common sense that you might be getting non smokers sick. |
