Next general election IN Greece poll

Angus Reid Global Monitor : Polls & Research
New Democracy First, Radical Left Third in Greece
February 04, 2008
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Greece’s governing New Democracy (ND) party is holding on to the top spot in the country’s political scene, according to a poll by MRB. 29.2 per cent of respondents would back the ND in the next parliamentary election, down one point since mid-January.

The opposition Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) is second with 25.9 per cent—down 2.1 points since mid-January—followed by the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYR) with 9.1 per cent, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) with 8.1 per cent, and the People’s Orthodox Alarm (LAOS) with 4.2 per cent.

In the March 2004 election, Kostas Karamanlis led the ND to victory, securing 165 seats in the Greek Parliament. PASOK had administered the government since January 1996. Current PASOK leader George Papandreou served as foreign minister under Kostas Simitis.

Greek voters renewed their Parliament in September 2007. Final results gave Karamanlis a second term in office, with 41.84 cent of the vote and 152 seats in the 300-member legislature. PASOK finished second, with 38.10 per cent and 102 lawmakers. In November, Papandreou defeated Evangelos Venizelos and Kostas Skandalidis in a special PASOK leadership ballot.

Last month, a judicial investigation was launched after Christos Zachopoulos—an advisor to Karamanlis, former secretary-general of the Culture Ministry and the head of the Central Archaeological Council—apparently attempted to commit suicide. The inquiry seeks to find out whether Zachopoulos was blackmailed by Evi Tsekou, a 35-year-old female assistant.

On Jan. 31, the ND lost one of its seats in the legislature when a lawmaker left the party to became an independent. Kostas Koukodimos had been accused of being involved in the Culture Ministry blackmail scandal. Koukodimos said he would leave the ND because it did not stand by his defence, declaring, "Until this situation—which is very painful for me—comes to an end I feel the need to declare myself as an independent." Koukodimos said he will continue to support the ruling party in the legislature.

Re: Next general election IN Greece poll

The dissapointment of the people with ND and PASOK is more and more visible in the gallop-polls. The two parties together have a total of 55% - I don't know if this ever happened again, even in a gallop-poll.

A lot of people who voted for PASOK and ND in the past elections were people dissapointed with these two parties, but they voted for them because they believe smaller parties are not capable for something more than having a small presense in the Parliament. But as long as the two parties will keep having this depressing and dissapointing image people will not have other choice than moving to the smaller parties. And this is what we need. I don't know if smaller parties are capable, but the big ones will be forced to sober up by losing more power.
