New wave of hurricanes batter US

Storm Gustav inflicted over $20b in damages on the US economy
After Gustav, a new wave of seasonal hurricanes target the US Gulf Coast while leaving trails of devastation and fatalities on their paths.

Although hurricane Gustav did not bring much damage to the US as expected, the new cluster of tropical storms in the North Atlantic Ocean are on their way to the eastern US territory, AP reported.

Hanna is the first in the series, which has already battered the poor Caribbean nation of Haiti, killing at least eleven people and causing 2-meter high floods in the port city of Gonaives. It has now shifted into a category one hurricane and changed course to US states of Florida and Georgia where it is forecast to make landfall in 72 hours as a category two hurricane.

Hanna is followed by tropical storm Ike which currently hovers around the Caribbean Bahamas and is expected to head for the US east coast as a category one hurricane on Wednesday.

Josephine is the last tropical storm in the cluster which is also said it will reach the US coast as category one hurricane on Thursday.

Last month's tropical storms killed and injured hundreds in the Caribbean nations of Haiti, Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic and left major damages to properties.

It is estimated that Gustav alone inflicted more than 20 billion dollars in damages on the US economy.
