![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | 01 Ιουν 2008 17:37:0 (Last updated: 02 Ιουν 2008 00:39:2) By Andreas Roditis The snap parliamentary elections held Sunday in FYROM were severely marred, as a person was shot dead and more were injured when police clashed with gunmen, said the country’s Interior Ministry. The clashes took place in the Albanian stronghold of Aracinono, near Skopje, when police cordoned a group of gunmen, added the Ministry. MIA, Albania’s state-run news agency, reported that gunbattles also broke out in several Albanian areas, adding that an explosive device went off in an empty café. Apart from Aracinovo, the voting was suspended in about ten polling stations throughout FYROM, due to various irregularities, said the head of the Electoral Commission. With regard to the clashes in Aracinovo, a police source told Reuters that police had been after a gang of gunmen in several villages, until the latter opened fired while in Aracinovo. Police fired back, injuring one of them. However, DUI (Albanian Democratic Union for Integration) official Shefik Duraku committed another version to the story, arguing he was on a convoy carrying ballot booths and papers to the villages when they were stopped by plain-clothes police. "They stopped our convoy and shot one round in the air, it was chaos, we got out from the cars and tried to flee," Shefik Duraku told Reuters, clarifying that a member of the group succumbed to his wounds, while two others suffered minor injuries. Dozens of police car are stationed outside Aracinovo, while as many as 200 Albanians have parked their cars in the middle of the street, blocking the way into the village. In the meantime, yet another shooting broke out in Skopje’s Cair neighbourhood in a school yard used as a polling station. The DUI’s leader, former guerrilla commander Ali Ahmeti, blamed the rival Democratic Party of Albanians (DPA) and the police for "provocations, violence and psychological terror". | GR Elite | Re: Unrest Mars FYROM Poll As predicted their "country" is falling apart. Hopefully one step closer to getting rid of this abomination of a state. The bad news is that people see the words "Macedonia elections" on the news coupled with 3rd world style election unrest and they might think this 3rd world behaviour is occurring in Greece.
