Albania Arms Depot Explodes, Civilian Casualties

Albania Arms Depot Explodes, Civilian Casualties
2008-03-15 12:12pm

A series of massive explosions at an arms depot in Albania has killed at least four people and injured over 200, with the death toll expected to climb.

The BBC reports that the explosions occurred as three teams of specialists were dismantling obsolete munitions at the base, near the Albanian capital, Tirana.

The first blast set off other explosions, which lasted several hours and caused widespread damage. The force of the blasts was felt in Tirana and the coastal resort of Durres, some 20km away, and heard in neighbouring Macedonia.

A number of homes near the depot were completely destroyed, while flights at Mother Teresa Tirana International Airport, several kilometres from the base, were suspended for 30 minutes after windows there were shattered.

The injured were admitted to hospital at Durres, as well as the capital's military hospital and a civilian health centre. Most of those arriving at Tirana's military hospital were civilians brought in a stream of ambulances and private cars. Many were women and children.

The death toll is expected to climb as there are fears for the three team, each of 21 people, who were working at the depot, several of whom were US citizens.

The US embassy in Tirana said it could not confirm the presence of US personnel at the site.

Albania has about 100,000 tons of excess ammunition stored in former army depots across the country, according to Defense Minister Fatmir Mediu.

Nato countries, particularly the US, Canada and Norway, have been helping with funding for Albania to destroy excess ammunition and obsolete weaponry.

60 people are feared killed and 160 injured in a series of huge explosions at an army munitions store in Albania.

Some of the dead are thought to have been explosives experts who were trying to dismantle part of the country's obsolete, Stalinist-era arsenal.

The explosions happened 10 miles north of the capital Tirana and lasted for several minutes, stopping rescuers from reaching the scene.

More aid to Albania

A new mission transporting humanitarian aid to Albania to assist victims of an industrial accident at a munitions plant in the neighbouring country departed from Greece on Monday, at around 1.00 p.m.

A C-130 aircraft took off from Elefsina air base transporting medical staff from the 251 Air Force General Hospital, among them an anaesthetist, an orthopedic surgeon and two nurses, as well as 110 boxes of IVs and 37 boxes of hygiene consumables and pharmaceuticals.

Albanian authorities will also be given with five heavy-duty protective bomb-disposal suits and five heavy-duty mine disposal vests, which are being transported to Albania on the same aircraft.

I think we better watch out for that petty mistakes of naming foreign countries.

Some of those munitions were meant to murder Serbs and Greeks.
