| Admins | Tadic wins Serbian elections The European Union says it wants to speed up Serbia's progress towards membership, in the wake of the election of Boris Tadic as President. The pro-Western Tadic has promised to press ahead with Serbia's efforts to join the bloc, despite differences over the breakaway province of Kosovo. His rival - who won over 47 percent of the vote- had advocated turning to Russia in place of the West. President Tadic said: "It's very important that Serbia stands united and that we altogether continue to work on improving the standard of living of our citizens." EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn said talks on a stabilisation agreement - the first step to membership - could start this year. A pact on visas and dialogue could come this week. "I am very much looking forward to working together with President Tadic and the Serbian government and Parliament in order to facilitate rather soon Serbia's candidate status in the European Union, maybe even in the course of this year 2008,'' Olli Rehn said. Despite the post-election revelry, the issue of Kosovo is a cloud looming on the horizon. Serbia's Prime Minister opposes EU support for independence of the province. But it seems a majority agree with Tadic, that EU membership is crucial to the country's future. Some analysts say the battle over the course Serbia will now take may cause the collapse of Tadic's fragile coalition. Euronews |

| GR Elite | Re: Tadic wins Serbian elections He 'll oppose Kosovo-Metohia independence we don't like he wants to enter EU at all cost. He also never does what he says and he's a false patriot. His name Boris is not a Serbian name and he was not even born in Central Serbia (He was born in Serbian Sarajevo).
