![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Opposing Turkey's EU Bid Opposing Turkey's EU Bid 30 Jan 2008 21:41:00 By Katerina Ioannidou Sources: ANA/MPA, AFP French President Nikolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who met in Paris on Wednesday, firmly opposed Turkey’s accession into the EU yet again. The two EU leaders said that Ankara could only benefit from a "privileged partnership." Stating he wants to be Turkey’s friend, Sarkozy argued that Turkey has no place in Europe, simply because it extends into Asia Minor. However, he continued, Turkey could benefit from a privileged partnership. Angela Merker, on her part, also championed a privileged partnership instead of a full EU membership. Touching on the plans for a Mediterranean Union, Merkel said it should give all EU member states the possibility to assume their responsibilities. Germany, however, never concealed its scepticism over the Mediterranean Union, noting that it could trigger divisions within the EU. All states can take part in the Mediterranean Union, commented the French President. |

| GR Fanatic | Re: Opposing Turkey's EU Bid Well; Lieblich Angela and Playboy Sar-cosy are right - Turkey should not be in the EU. And Most of the population opposed the membership but it's only the Government's insistance. But no matter what, Turkey will never be a member of the EU, i hope.

| GR Elite | Re: Opposing Turkey's EU Bid None of my German and Austrian friends want Turkey to enter the EU and some of these people are pretty liberal minded. Many of their fellow countrymen just assumed Greece would veto any entry. Even if you set aside the animalistic aspects of Turks entering Europe with their genocidal history you still have the economic aspects. Europe would be obliged to spend so much money bringing Turkey up to 1st world standards its not funny. Germany is having a hard time paying to rebuild East Germany and that is with Humans living there. |
