Musharraf Declared Emergency Rule

Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf has declared emergency rule according to state-run TV amid intensification of violent incidents by pro- Taleban and Al Qaeda militants. Private channels Geo News and Dawn News earlier quoted unnamed sources as saying the government had made up its mind to declare emergency rule. Shortly afterwards they came off air.
According to state channel, general Musharraf issued provisional constitutional order, invoking emergency powers which might lead to postponement of parliamentary elections due in January.
President Musharraf advisor told the French News Agency that Musharraf will make an announcement. According to eyewitnesses militants had surrendered Islamabad state television since Saturday morning.

It should be reminded that Gen. Musharraf is awaiting a Supreme Court ruling on whether he was eligible to run for re-election last month while remaining army chief.
