During a briefing with German Chancellor, Angela Merkel in Wiesbaden, Germany
Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed today he would stick to his plan to visit Iran, despite reports about a plot to abduct or kill him in Tehran. During their talks, the German Chancellor underlined the dangers for Russia and the West in the event a common stand agreement, particularly on the settlement of the Iranian issue, was not reached. On his part, President Putin stressed that Berlin and Moscow are well aware of their joint responsibility in the strengthening of confidence and cooperation relations among European states. It should be noted that Putin’s visit to Iran, the first by a Kremlin leader to Iran since Josef Stalin in 1943, has drawn intense interest because of Russia’s role as a mediator in six-power talks designed to rein in Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
"Baseless Reports"
Mr. Putin confirmed today that he will pay his visit to Iran despite reports of an assassination plot there. Earlier, a Kremlin spokesman had stressed that President Putin visit to Iran had not been confirmed yet due to reports of a plot to assassinate him there. Interfax said that according to Russian security service sources, several groups of suicide bombers had been preparing for an attack in Tehran. The services had relied on information received from several unnamed sources outside the country, the agency said.
In its immediate response, Iranian Foreign Ministry described reports about assassination plot as erroneous which will have no effect on the programme already decided upon for Mr Putin’s visit to Tehran. In parallel, the announcement said the reports were "part of a psychological war waged by enemies to disrupt good relations between Iran and Russia". |
