"During the Vietnam war, between 1962 and 1971, the United States military sprayed 20,000,000 US gallons (76,000,000 l; 17,000,000 imp gal) of chemical herbicides and defoliants in South Vietnam as part of the aerial defoliation program known as Operation Ranch Hand.[13] Agent Orange made up about sixty percent of these herbicides. The concentrations used were 20 to 55 times normal agricultural use for killing plants. The campaign destroyed 5 million acres of upland and mangrove forests and about 500,000 acres of crops. The US began to target food crops in October 1962, primarily using Agent Blue.
