| GR Member | Titans I would like to learn more about the Titans. When I was a kid I read a great comic that told the story of the Titans - in very simplistic, summary form - but good as far as I knew. I know that the Scandinavians had a similar mythology about giant gods known as Jotuns (spelling?). Did these cultures have some overlap over centuries of trade? Or is that not possible since the Hellenes are much more ancient? Did Hellenes travel up north? (As far as I am concerned, if that is true, they were the smart ones. Greece is beautiful, but horrible neighbours. Sorry if I offended.) Back to the Titans, lets get some stories coming. ( I am in no way whatsoever suggeting that Scandinavians are Hellenes). | Admins | Re: Titans The Titans of Greek mythology as I know where the succesors of the Ekatoheires and the Cyclops, the earliest superhuman creatures (Descedants of Uranos and Gaia). The Titans were 12 (6 males-6 females) and their succesors where the 12 Olympian gods. Zeus was son of Kronos, one of the 12 Titans. There was a great fight between the two generations known as "Titanomachia" where the Olympians triumphed and ruled the world since then. After their defeat, the Titans were inprisoned in Tartarus, the lower layer of the underworld. I can't remember something more. Hesiodos in Theogony explains a lot about them I think. |

| GR Fanatic | Re: Titans The Titans, also known as the elder gods, ruled the earth before the Olympians overthew them. The Titans are a race of godlike giants who were considered to be the personifications of the forces of nature. The ruler of the Titans was Cronus who was de-throned by his son Zeus. Most of the Titans fought with Cronus against Zeus and were punished by being banished to Tartarus. During their rule the Titans were associated with the various planets. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Titans The Titans and a brief history describing each one. Gaea Gaea is the Earth goddess. She mated with her son Uranus to produce the remaining Titans. Uranus Uranus is the sky god and first ruler. He is the son of Gaea , who created him without help. He then became the husband of Gaea and together they had many offspring, including twelve of the Titans. His rule ended when when Cronus, encouraged by Gaea, castrated him. He either died from the wound or withdrew from earth. Cronus Cronus was the ruling Titan who came to power by castrating his Father Uranus. His wife was Rhea. There offspring were the first of the Olympians. To insure his safety Cronus ate each of the children as they were born. This worked until Rhea, unhappy at the loss of her children, tricked Cronus into swallowing a rock, instead of Zeus. When he grew up Zeus would revolt against Cronus and the other Titans, defeat them, and banish them to Tartarus in the underworld. Rhea Rhea was the wife of Cronus. Cronus made it a practice to swallow their children. To avoid this, Rhea tricked Cronus into swallowing a rock, saving her son Zeus. Oceanus Oceanus is the unending stream of water encircling the world. Together with his wife Tethys produced the rivers and the three thousand ocean nymphs. Tethys Tethys is the wife of Oceanus. Together they produced the rivers and the three thousand ocean nymphs. Hyperion Hyperion is the Titan of light, an early sun god. He is the son of Gaea and Uranus. He married his sister Theia. Their children Helius (the sun), Selene (the moon), and Eos (the dawn). Hyperion Hyperion is the Titan of light, an early sun god. He is the son of Gaea and Uranus. He married his sister Theia. Their children Helius (the sun), Selene (the moon), and Eos (the dawn). Mnemosyne Mnemosyne was the Titan of memory and the mother of Muses. Themis Themis was the Titan of justice and order. She was the mother of the Fates and the Seasons. Iapetus Iapetus was the father of Prometheus, Epimetheus, Menoetius, and Atlas by Clymene. Coeus Titan of Intelligence. Father of Leto. Crius Couldnt find anything have to further investigate. Phoebe Titan of the Moon. Mother of Leto. Prometheus Prometheus was the wisest Titan. His name means "forethought" and he was able to foretell the future. He was the son of Iapetus . When Zeus revolted against Cronus Prometheus deserted the other Titans and fought on Zeus side. By some accounts he and his brother Epimetheus were delegated by Zeus to create man. In all accounts, Prometheus is known as the protector and benefactor of man. He gave mankind a number of gifts including fire. He also tricked Zeus into allowing man to keep the best part of the animals sacrificed to the gods and to give the gods the worst parts. For this Zeus punished Prometheus by having him chained to a rock with an eagle tearing at his liver. He was to be left there for all eternity or until he agreed to disclose to Zeus which of Zeus children would try to replace him. He was eventually rescued by Heracles without giving in to Zeus. Epimetheus Epimetheus was a stupid Titan, whose name means "afterthought". He was the son of Iapetus. In some accounts he is delegated, along with his brother Prometheus by Zeus to create mankind. He also accepted the gift of Pandora from Zeus, which lead to the introduction of evil into the world. Atlas Atlas was the son of Iapetus. Unlike his brothers Prometheus and Epimetheus, Atlas fought with the other Titans supporting Cronus against Zeus. Due to Cronus's advance age Atlas lead the Titan's in battle. As a result he was singled out by Zeus for a special punishment and made to hold up the world on his back. Metis Metis was the Titaness of the forth day and the planet Mercury. She presided over all wisdom and knowledge. She was seduced by Zeus and became pregnant with Athena. Zeus became concerned over prophecies that her second child would replace Zeus. To avoid this Zeus ate her. It is said that she is the source for Zeus wisdom and that she still advises Zeus from his belly. It may seem odd for Metis to have been pregnant with Athena but, never mentioned as her mother. This is because the classic Greeks believed that children were generated solely from the fathers sperm. The women was thought to be nothing more than a vessel for the fetus to grow in. Since Metis was killed well before Athena's birth her role doesn't count. Dione According to Homer in the Iliad she is the mother of Aphrodite. Thea Is what I call my fathers sister lol. I dont know anything about her. I have to further investigate. |

| GR Fanatic | Re: Titans In Greek mythology, the Titans (Greek: Τιτάν Titan; plural: Τιτάνες Titanes) were a race of powerful deities that ruled during the legendary Golden Age. The Titans were twelve from their first literary appearance, in Hesiod, Theogony; pseudo-Apollodorus, in Bibliotheke, adds a thirteenth Titan Dione, a double of Theia, aka Medusa. The six male Titans are known as the Titanes, and the female as the Titanides ("Titanesses"). The Titans were associated with various primal concepts, some of which are simply extrapolated from their names: ocean and fruitful earth, sun and moon, memory and natural law. The twelve first-generation Titans were led by the youngest, Cronus, who overthrew their father, Uranus ('Heaven'), at the urgings of their mother, Gaia ('Earth'). The Titans later gave birth to other Titans, notably the children of Hyperion (Helios, Eos, and Selene), the daughters of Coeus (Leto and Asteria), and the sons of Iapetus — Prometheus, Epimetheus, Atlas, and Menoetius; all of these descendants in the second generation are also known as "Titans". The Titans preceded the Twelve Olympians, who, led by Zeus, eventually overthrew them in the Titanomachy ('War of the Titans'). The Titans were then imprisoned in Tartarus, the depths of the underworld, with the exception of a few. In Hesiod's Theogony the twelve Titans follow the Hecatonchires (the "Hundred-handed") and Cyclopes as the youngest set of children of Uranus, and Gaia: "Afterwards she lay with Uranus and bore deep-swirling Oceanus, Coeus and Crius and Hyperion and Iapetus, Theia and Rhea, Themis and Mnemosyne and gold-crowned Phoebe and lovely Tethys. After them was born Cronus the wily, youngest and most terrible of her children, and he hated his lusty sire." Uranus kept all of Gaia's children trapped within her womb, and Gaia groaned from the strain. Eventually, Cronus, her youngest child at the time, volunteered to set upon his father, castrating him, thereby freeing Gaia's children and setting himself up as king of the gods with Rhea as his wife and queen. Rhea gave birth to a new generation of gods to Cronus, but, in fear that they too would eventually overthrow him, he swallowed them all whole one by one. Only Zeus was saved: Rhea gave Cronus a stone in swaddling clothes in his place, and placed the infant Zeus in Crete to be guarded by the Kouretes. Once Zeus reached adulthood, he subdued Cronus by wile rather than force, using a potion concocted with the help of Gaia, his grandmother, to forcibly cause Cronus to vomit up Zeus's siblings. A war between younger and older gods commenced, in which Zeus is aided by the Hecatonchires and Cyclopes, who had once again been freed from Tartarus. Zeus won after a long struggle, and cast many of the Titans down into Tartarus. And yet the older gods left their mark on the world: Oceanus continued to encircle the world, and the name of "bright shining" Phoebe was attached as an epithet to effulgent Apollo, "Phoebus Apollo". Some of them had not fought the Olympians and became key players in the new administration: Mnemosyne as a Muse, Rhea, Hyperion, Themis, or the "right ordering" of things and Metis. |

1)Atlas: The only one i know with that name is the son of Poseidon , supreme ruler of Atlantis, expert in astronomy. Despite i have Isiodos's Theogony i am not in the mood to find out the one u mentioned above. 2)Scandinavian mythology: Ancient religions around the world are similar. Why is happening such thing? Because of two acts: a) The expansion of the numerous mediterranean prehistoric race, which its 100% descendants are Hellenes, b) The ancient hellenic merchant and strategic genius, which managed to spread to the world religion, philosophy and ways of establishing a lawful society . 3) Scandinavian blood relationship: I have heard Danish are related to us,but i cant tell for sure. Also Welsh people are similar to us,but thats another story...
