This is interesting regarding the Greek and Turkish Survial series. It seems the Turks will never change.

“Survivor: Turkey vs Greece”, a reality show aired in both countries since September, offers 250,000 euros ($315,000) to the contestant who “survives” the clash between a Greek and a Turkish team pitted against each other in primitive conditions on islands off Panama.

The show, flavoured with a strong dose of nationalism and hostile rhetoric, flouts a wave of recent bilateral initiatives to bring Turkey and Greece closer after they came to the brink of war in 1995 over an uninhabited rocky island in the Aegean Sea.

Some suggest that the coproduction of such an entertainment program—unthinkable a decade ago—could in itself be a sign, although ironic, of the level of rapprochement the two countries have achieved.

But the show’s many critics, including Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, say politics is no joke.

The two teams, which started with 10 people each, have their hardliners, who inevitably grabbed the spotlight, although displays of nationalist zeal began to scale down as the contest progressed and in-fighting erupted in both camps.

“I don’t care if a Greek dies here,” a Turkish contestant says, while another boasts that the Greeks are “already 1-0 behind” — referring to the war Turks won against invading Greek armies in 1923 under the leadership of national hero Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

The same historic episode haunts their rivals: “If a Turk wins, he will become a second Ataturk,” the top nationalist in the Greek team says, warning that if the Greeks lose, they “won’t be able to go home for shame.”

A Greek woman conceals that she is a Turkish speaker in hopes of spying on her rivals and fears the Turks might “kill” her if her secret is revealed.

“Such reckless transformation of nationalist feelings into TV ratings and advertising revenue is dangerous,” Turkish TV critic Yuksel Aytug said.

“It would be too optimistic to believe that the man in the street will tend to see this simply as a caricature of Turkish-Greek animosity,” he said.

“The show could undermine efforts to build friendship and confidence between the two countries.”

Turkey’s Human Rights Association issued an angry appeal for “an end to racist programs” and dozens of viewers complained to Turkey’s broadcasting watchdog.

What did you expect from Turks seriously? Most of them have hatred in them for Greeks. I knew that their would be problems with Survivor between Turk people and Greeks.

I have to admit I agree with the karagiotzi. Greeks and Turks have deep hatred for eachother. Their will always be problems just look at this article regarding a game show. The governments are sponsoring these ridiculous programs hoping that it will bring us together. They need to realize that it will never happen. We are just two complete different people, different religion and background. We might share some of the same blood but thats about it.

Re: Survivor Greece - Turkey

I thought you guys were kidding! There really is a Survivor based on this premise? Unbelievable. What's next? Isrealis and Palestinians? Americans and Iraqis? By the way, what are the ratings for this program? Is it popular?

In Greece it attracts about 25%-30% of the TV viewers according to the statistical researches. Personally I don't watch this kind of shows (Big brother, Survivor etc.) as I find them nonsense and boring.

I agree I cant stand this kind of reality shows. Although this survivor series is in exception because it shows on how the Turks are really savages. Just read the article.
