| GR Fanatic | Greater Greece - The Territorial Expansion of Modern Greece (maps) Wkipedia: The Megali Idea (Greek = "Great Idea") is an irredentist concept of Greek nationalism expressing the goal of establishing a Greek state that would encompass all ethnic Greeks. The Megali Idea implied the goal of reestablishing a Greek state as ancient geographer Strabo wrote, with a Greek world extending west from Sicily, to Mikra Asia (Asia Minor) and Euxenus Pontus (Black Sea) to the east, and from Thrace, Macedonia and Epirus, north, to Crete and Cyprus to the south. It would be a nation-state with its capital in Constantinople. The term was invented in 1844 by Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Kolettis. The Great Idea has dominated the foreign policy and hence the domestic politics of Greece. From the War of Independence during the 1820s through to the Balkan wars from the beginning of the twentieth century, the main opponents of Greece in its realization of the Great Idea were the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. [EndQuote] With this map I figured out that my pappou, with whom I share a name, was born inside the Ottoman Empire (Turkish empire). He was born in 1904 on the occupied Greek island of Chios. This great island was regained by Greece in 1913 during the Balkan Wars. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. | GR Elite | Re: Greater Greece - The Territorial Expansion of Modern Greece (maps) Yes but the areas listed in Greater Greece have been lived on by Greeks for THOUSANDS OF YEARS. Unlike other countries "greater" maps (albanian ,skops) which have their maps covering lands their 'people's' have briefly lived on and often not as majority. This is a FUNDAMENTAL difference IMO between Greek "Greater" maps and other countries.
