Re: WAS IT GENOCIDE ? OR DID THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE JUST GET UP AND LEAVE ?

May we NEVER forget !

Close your eyes and try (just for a moment) to imagine the terror, pain and suffering of the Greek men, women and children who were mindlessly murdered at the hands of the Turk. It's too much to even contemplate.

Re: WAS IT GENOCIDE ? OR DID THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE JUST GET UP AND LEAVE ?

The Pontian genocide is a factual historical event. Little is said also about the massacre of 200000 in the island of Chios in the apex of the ottoman period--- of which an artistic painting of De la croix depicting scenes of the massacres exist in the Louvre-- The Pontian disaster is overshadowed by the gigantic genocide of the armenians- in numbers and in scope-- which preceded the annhilitation of the remainder of greeks and christianity in the Ottoman provinces. Had there been as many greeks as armenians in the provinces, we would have been subjected to the same fate. Once the east was consolidated and cleansed from its ancestral inhabitants , the hour struck for greek cities on the western coast, of which Smyrna was the most traumatic and tragic disaster. If there was a city that should never have been abandoned, come what may, was Smyrna, the Hellenic jewel of Byzantium. The catastrophe was lessened in its magnitude becasue some sections of the city , every christian quarter was ransacked, were able to make their escape. Initially the allied ships anchored at a distance from the harbor were refusing to take in refugees. After a few days of mayhem , this policy was reviewed and the ships began to accomodate the escapees.
