Greece gained a lot of their land back when he was in office (Balkan Wars). Metaxas was a great patriot. Papadopoulos was a mixed bag. A staunch anti-communist and was very vital to American interests at that time (also a source of controversy). Papandreou (both Giorgos and Andreas) are OK, as well as Karamanlis. However the younger Papandreou and Karamanlis different story.

| Re: List of the modern Greek leaders To me the best leaders of the modern Greek state were Capodistrias, Trikoupis, Eleftherios Venizelos, Metaxas, Constantinos Karamanlis and Andreas Papandreou. The worst were Georgios Papadopoulos, Mitsotakis and Simitis. | ||||||||||||||

| Re: List of the modern Greek leaders What I liked best about Papadopoulos is that he was 100% anti Communist. He tried to make a great Greece but he was in a tight grip by the USA. He pretty much screwed things up a lot. Im pretty sure he wanted things to turn out differently but given the circumstances they did not. As for my favorites it would have to be Metaxas and Venizelos.

My Mood: ![]() | Re: List of the modern Greek leaders Papadopoulos was good and bad. He played a crucial role in saving Greece from being over run by communists and for promoting Greek culture which to be honest tell who is doing that now? You have to give the guy some credit. The guy even rejected amnesty and prefered to stay in prison until he died!
