Re: List of the modern Greek leaders

Papadopoulos was the best. People like to talk bad about the guy because of the Cyprus situation. Remember I dont think Papadopoulos have a choice to do nothing. I like that he had a the idea to make Greece stick to its roots.

Re: List of the modern Greek leaders

Papadopoulos isn't responsible for the Cyprus situation. Iaonnidis was, because he ousted Papadopoulos before the Cyprus situation. If Papadopoulos was still in charge the conflict would've been much different, because he had to answer to his American bosses.

Now, I do think he was to authoritarian for the masses, but looking back now, he seems better.

As for Mitsotakis, I've never heard anything good about him. He's close with the Bush family.

Re: List of the modern Greek leaders

How do you like Papadopoulos, can you explain me? The "protection of Greece from communism" was just a silly pretense coming from the Americans. Greece would never become communist. And Papadopoulos had a big responsibility for the Cypriot disaster. What did he do for Greece which was salutary? I want specific things.

Megale, Mitsotakis' government of 1990-1993 was full of scandals and a disaster for Greece. I don't feel of saying more. I can say he was the worst of the three I mentioned as worse.

Well, I never mentioned that he was ideal. A Papandreou/Karamanlis ethier or would've been a better situation.

Re: List of the modern Greek leaders

Maybe you guys who live in Greece can clarify this. My father once told me that Papadopoulos was very good for the people who lived in the country. The small villages benefited apparently. I was young when he told me and he has since passed on but I'm curious to know why so many found this quasi-dictator a good ruler.

During the "Dictatorship of the Colonels" they were many public works and constructions. They were many new roads and infrastructure projects in the Greek countryside, that's why many people who lived in the villages back then will have a good word about the dictatorship. Many of the roads etc. were constructed by the army instead of private construction companies like it is happening today. Also, the only skyscrapers of Athens were built during the dictatorship.

All these moves by the dictatorship were "impresiveness moves". They wanted to take the people on their side with these moves and make them ignore the national policies of the dictatorship and the betrayal of Greece they were commiting for the favor of the Americans. These works can't confute the cretinism of Papadopoulos' dictatorship.
