I like souvlakis and spanakopita. I don't like mousaka at all.

Mousaka is my favorite but very heavy on the stomach.

Re: Favorite Greek dish?

I notice that a lot of Greek people like mousaka. It is true that eggplant is not used a lot in other countries' dishes, so maybe it is a taste acquired by Greeks from young age.

Souvlakis are gaining a lot of popularity in Canada, they even have them ready-prepared in supermarkets for BBQ. Also, the Lebanese restaurants serve them as shish-kabobs (chicken, pork, beef). Is souvlaki originally Greek or Lebanese?

Souvlaki comes from souvla, meaning spit or skewer. Souvlaki is Greek, anyone can call their food cooked that way whatever they like. But souvlaki is a greek word and refers to Greek food grilled on a skewer.

Re: Favorite Greek dish?

Thanks for the explanation, Hellinika. It is the same as "brochette" in French then. The art of souvlaki is all in the marinating, it is not just to string some pieces of meat on a skewer.

The thing I like about Greek restaurants is that they serve really big portions enough to feed two persons. And the prices are really affordable. :bananen_smilies046:
