My Mood:   | Italian American philohellene Hi guys. My name is Antonio. I am an Italian American living in the US. On a trip to my family's hometown in Italy, I saw a plaque on the local church which said that the town was founded in the 16th century by "Albanesi Epiroti" who had fled to Italy in the fifteenth century and worshipped according to the Greek Rite until the early 17th century when they were forced to switch to the Latin Rite. I have a very Italian family name and I wondered whether I was descended from these refugees from the Turks, or if my family was an Italian one that moved to the town later. So, I had my DNA tested as part of the National Geographic's Genographic project. The results confirmed that I have a DNA type more common in the southern Balkans than Italy. I found nine exact DNA matches in Greece (most grouped in Epirus & the Peloponnese) and another ethnic Greek from southern Albania. I have not found any Albanians who match my DNA exactly. Based on the locations of the people who did match my DNA, I believe it is probable that my ancestors fled to Italy from Epirus while other relatives fled south to the Peloponnese. For what it is worth, the local wine in my family's hometown in Italy is called "Aglianico" a name which is derived from the word Hellenic. I have ancestors named Schiro (pronounced Skiro) which seems to be derived from the island of Skyros. Also, I have ancestors named Grieco ("Greek"), though whether this was due to their ethnicity or religion, I do not know. Grieco is a very common name in southern Italy. As someone whose ancestors were force to flee by the Turks, I am very sympathetic to Greece and most especially the Cypriots. I am very interested in Greek history, language, culture, & genetics. I took a short Greek language course at the local Orthodox church, which I enjoyed very much.
