Re: Your favorite non Greek civilization?

Thanks, Hellinika. Yes, it was the only instance I read about a human sacrifice, so I was quite surprised. It could have been just a dramatization effect to make us more sympathetic to the daughter and to the father (?). Whether the story of Troy is real or not still remains debatable as you said.

Re: Your favorite non Greek civilization?

I think that we have to respect all the civilizations... even we don't like it

The Mayas, The Aztecs did Human sacrifices, The Greeks, Roman, Celtic, Vikings did it too,
maybe they never practised the cannibalism, but they did human sacrifices as well.
Rome prohibited them in the year 97 adC and tried to impose the prohibition in every Europe with diverse success.

Anyway all are great civilizations, and they contributed a lot to the modern life, by example the Maya Civilization:

The studies on the stars that carried the Maya continue surprising the scientists. Its obsession by the movement of the heavenly bodies was based on the cyclic conception of the history, And the astronomy was the tool that utilized to know the influence of the stars on the world.
The Mayan solar calendar was more exact that the one that today utilize. All the cities of the classical period are oriented respect al movement of the heavenly vault. Many buildings were built for the purpose of portraying heavenly phenomena in the Land, like The Castle of Chichen Itza;, where the descent is observed of Kukulkan, Snake formed by the shadows that are created in the vertexes of the building during the solstices. The four stairs of the building add 365 steps, the days of the year. In the Codex Dresden and in numerous wakes the calculations of the of the planet venus, solar, lunar cycles they are found and the boards of frequency of the eclipses.
Also The Maya had besides a year of 365 days (with 18 months of 20 days and a month interspersed of 5 days).

Re: Your favorite non Greek civilization?

I believe every civilization/culture has its good and bad. I prefer to look at the good things that each civilization/culture brings to the collective knowledge and advancement of humanity. Didn't Socrates say that he was a "citizen of the world"?
