Question Anyone familiar with the Orthodox Church of America?

Have any of you heard of the Orthodox Church of America or the American Orthodox Church? I only just realized they exist, and they seem like odd ducks to me. (I know this makes me sound like I live in a bubble.) From what I gather, the OCA is mostly converts, and everything is in English (cold to me). And the AOC is kind of an offshoot, fringe group.

I’ve been to a Greek Orthodox Church where everything was in English (not even one Kyrie Eleison), and I felt like I was in the twilight zone.

This is the first time that I heard about them. I found a link to their site and your right they look like converts.

Re: Anyone familiar with the Orthodox Church of America?

I remember reading a brochure about it. I got the impression it was for those people who were raised without a greek identity (despite being Greek) but still wanted to go to church thereby having English services.
I've never been to one nor do i know anyone who has. I think though that after a couple more generations it will get more popular. FOr example a first born generation person will speak Greek and know Greek customs (relgious ones) well. But after 2nd and 3rd born ones, espeically with some race mixing with others than that is what i think they will try to attract.

Re: Anyone familiar with the Orthodox Church of America?

The impression I got was that these particular converts were quite humorless, which often happens when people “see the light”. They remind me of vegans or Pilates fanatics—they’ve “found it” (remember that slogan?) and everyone else is lost. They actually referred to the Greek Church as an “ethnic club” and said we care more about our festivals than spirituality.

Needless to say I got a little riled, but I might as well have been talking to Baptists.

Our festivals are our customs, we cant and should not forget them.
Even our priests say "Keep the customs",
about spirituality now, we care about it but theres no need to go to a church to contact with Alpha and Omega, afterall for us who r baptized ,we carry the cristian sign, a first class communication gadget with God.

The only problem we got is that we seldom give him a call...
