Re: Is Orthodoxy losing ground?

I think its the purest form of Christianity. Greeks wrote the bible to if I remember correctly along with some of Jewish origin.

Re: Is Orthodoxy losing ground?

One of the best things about orthodoxy is love and friendship between brothers (greeks, serbs, russians). In catholicism it isnt the same thing. I think orthodoxy is much better.

Only in Easter do I see so many Greeks at church in NY. What about in the countries you live in. Are the young active in going to church?

Well with my expirence and what i've seen of others, the young are active until they reach 17, 18 years old. After that its a few times a year for most.

Re: Is Orthodoxy losing ground?

Is Greek Orthodoxy different from Russian Orthodoxy?

Do the Orthodox Christians use the same version of the Bible as the Catholic Christians?

The religion, the beliefs and the manners worship is made with are the same.

The difference (besides the language of course) is that they have different primates, they aren't all under one like it happens with Catholicism and the Pope.

Orthodox churches are autochephalus. For example the Archbishop of Athens is the primate of the Greek Church, the Patriarch of Moscow is the primate of the Russian Church, the Patriarch of Serbia the primate of the Serbian church etc. The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople is considered first among the equal primates of all the Orthodox churches worldwide, but his power is limited.

The Bible of Orthodoxy includes the Old Testament and the New Testament. I don't know if they are any differences in the texts with the Bible of Catholicism.

Most probably the texts are the same, but they are many differences in the rendering of the texts. The dogmatic reason of the schism was "filioque" as you maybe know, but today the differences between Orthodoxy and Catholicism in the mentality and the beliefs are a lot, and this is discernible in the teachings of each church and the way the worship is made.

Re: Is Orthodoxy losing ground?

Thanks, Ellinas, for your explanations. This is all very interesting. I asked about the Russian Orthodoxy also because I think the Russian language is based on the Greek language/alphabet.

No, I don't know what is the difference (filioque) you mentioned. I just know that for Catholic Christians, they also have the Old Testament and the New Testament in their Bible. There is probably only one version of the Bible for all the different categories of Christianity, like Protestant, Orthodox, Catholic, etc. What I find strange is that why from the same Bible, there could be different ways of preaching or teaching the religion or even to have different beliefs.

[Note: Although I believe in God, I am not a Christian nor do I follow any other religion. I only read some portions of the Old Testament (mostly out of curiosity) and don't know much about the New Testament.]

The Cyrrilic alphabet was created in the 9th century AD by Cyrrilos and Methodios, two scholars from Thessaloniki. Back then the Slavs had language but no alphabet, so they made it for them when the Slavs became Christians.

The filioque clause was a dispute that took place between Western and Eastern Christianity. The East stated that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father, while the West stated that the Holy Spirit procceds from the Father but also from the Son.

This dispute was the dogmatic reason for the schizm, however they were a lot of other reasons too, mainly political.

I would suggest you to have a look in the New Testament too, you will be able to meet Christianity better. I am saying this because the influence of Judaism is bold in the Old Testament, and sometimes it presents a God who is punisher. The New Testament on the other hand focuses more on Love and Forgiveness.
