Re: Is Orthodoxy losing ground?

Having Greek pride is great. The one thing I cant understand is if your a proud Greek then you have to proud of our Greek Orthodox religion and history. I think when people refer to our religion they relate to it not by the religious aspect but more of a nationalist perspective. Remember Greek Orthodoxy kept our ancestors together for 500 years under Turkish occupation and savagery. I hope you guys understand what I meant by that comment.

Re: Is Orthodoxy losing ground?

A factor where I live is intermarriage of faiths. Many Greeks, including me, married outside of the Greek Orthodox church. Even if you didn't convert (I didn't) it's still hard to be part of the religious community when you are the only person in the household who is Orthodox. Just one of my realities.

Re: Is Orthodoxy losing ground?

With Greece Greeks, it really is a contradiction. Now were the Anatolian, Pontian, Cypriots and Egypt Greeks fake Greeks then the ones from the present day area?? NO. Greeks were always quite scattered. I think the whole "fake Greek tag" stems from overall anti-american attitudes.

Re: Is Orthodoxy losing ground?

I guess you are waiting an anwser from me since I am the only "Greece Greek" in this thread. As you will agree I never had a problem with one of you and I did not question your Greekness since you all preserve roots and your are proud to be Greeks.

However, they are people with Greek grand parents who don't feel Greeks at all and they don't even know where Greece is.
They are people with Greek grandparents who present their selves are Americans or Australians and hide their Greek identity.
They are people of Greek descent who come here as tourists and are aggresive trying to convince as that they have a better life abroad and other nonsense that. These are the people we call fake Greeks or Amerikanakia. Personally I can't call a "straight Greek" someone who forgotten his identity, even if he has full Greek DNA. With the same logic I must call straight Greeks" the South Italians and the West Turks.

Am I wrong?

No you're not wrong. You're here with diaspora Greeks, so I know you don't have a negative view. Personally, I've never had a problem with Greeks in Greece calling me an American. Now with the 2nd 3rd generation types hounding others that living aboard is better, then yes I understand why. Who can blame them??? Thanks for clearing everything up.

Re: Is Orthodoxy losing ground?

I guess we're lucky as where I live the Greek community is very visible. In the ancient times Greeks were not always from the home country. They were Greek by culture and ethos if not by geography especially after Alexander.

Re: Is Orthodoxy losing ground?

Our main goal for all Greeks should be is to preach to the younger generations on why they should be proud of their heritage, culture and religion whether they believe or not. Hopefully this forum can have a positive contribution to that.

Not only that but the Greek government needs to give more support to the Greek diaspora.

Re: Is Orthodoxy losing ground?

First the Greek government needs to support their people in Greece and then they can focus on the diaspora Greeks.

Re: Is Orthodoxy losing ground?

I dont think it is truth. People believe in God more and more. Only thing is people work much so they cant go to church much. But people believe in God, even in homes. You dont have to be in a Church to believe in Jesus...

I think that more and more catholic are turning Orthodox, and more and more Muslims are turning Christian, cuz I saw even in china orthodox people... Orthodox is best religion on world if you ask me...
