| Re: Photos from Agion Oros Nice photos Ellinas. I want to visit there some day. I heard that Agios Oros is like its own country. When I went to Greece last summer, I was lucky enough to go to Mt. Grammos. Not once, but twice. I didn't bring a camera though. I'm still kicking myself in the ass over that. That is the most beautiful place I have ever seen in my life. It's absolutely breathtaking.
The next time I go to Greece, I'm definately bringing a camera. I'm going to buy the best digital camera I can find so I can also immediately download the pictures to my computer. I think Grammos are the tallest mountains in Greece only second to Mt. Olympus. Don't quote me on that though.
I was also lucky enough to go to the village called Grammos. It's the very last village you come to when going into the Grammos mountains. It's altitude is so high that trees don't grow there. Only grass grows there. It's absolutely beautiful. The village once had a population of somewhere around 2,000 people about 3 or 4 hundred years ago when Greece was still under Turkish rule. Now there are only maybe about 10 houses there.
The story goes that the Turkish governor of Ioannina at that time wanted to marry the daughter of the mayor of the village of Grammos. He refused to give his daughter to a Turk. So this Turk had Albanians come and destroy the village. It still hasn't recovered ever since then when it had a couple thousand people. You can still see traces of the rock foundations of these houses scattered all over the mountain sides. It's a very erie feeling to see that.
The second time I went there, the town of Grammos and the state of Kastoria held a festival there. They had free lamb, sausage, shish-kabob and retsina (Greek wine). All you can eat and drink all night long for free. They had dancing and all night long. I had a blast. I think they are going to do this every year from now on. Last summer when I went there was the very first of these yearly festivals.
They are doing this so people will come and see how beautiful it is there and maybe buy property and build houses. They are selling land there for very cheap. They are doing it to try to build the town up again. The current inhabitants I think live there all year long, but people are coming and buying property so they can build a summer get-a-way house. It's like paradise on earth there. It really is. I can't wait to go there again some day. |
