Smile Orthodoxy vs Catholic

Greetings! I am from Vancouver, BC and I am half Greek. I am 20 and just getting into my roots and do not speak Greek very well, or know much about history. I always assumed Orthodox was just a form of Catholic, as ignorant as that sounds.

Is this total BS? People tell me it's opposite, but really, what are the differences, and WHY are they different?

Thanks!

Re: Orthodoxy vs Catholic

Christianity first spread in the predominantly Greek-speaking eastern half of the Roman Empire which would make Orthodoxy older than Catholicism. Any other questions feel free to ask.

Catholicism became from Orthodoxy. Orthodoxy and Catholicism are very little different. Religion ranks are different (Catholic: Cardinal Orhodox: Patriarch,...), you sit in church and we stand and few little detail differences. But we are both christians and have same believes.

More differences than you think. To start off the church split in half in during the 11th century AD. Catholics believe that the Pope is infalliable, Orthodox Christians don't. Orthodox Christians follow a different calender, thats why Easter dosen't always fall on the same Sunday with other Christian sects. Orthodox priests can marry. Just look at the architecture of an Orthodox church compared to a Catholic church. Those are the differences just off the top of my head. There are many more.

Orthodox Christians don't bow down and worship a man in robes who holds a crooked staff and thinks he's divine.

Re: Orthodoxy vs Catholic

Although Pope Benedict has stated that the Orthodox Patriarch is the first among equals, there is a history of dissension between the two faiths. The infallibility of the Pope is a sore point with many of the Orthodox religion. There is also a long history of Catholic exploitation of the Balkans dating back to the Crusades, a series of wars directed against Muslims but did much to destroy Orthodox and Jewish communities.
Throw in all the Catholic problems of the last few years (pedophilic priests, archaic rules, questionable political alliances etc.) and you will see that there is a lot of resentment for a faith born from the same source as the Orthodox religion. Unfortunatley the Catholics did it to themselves and it's up to them to fix it.

About architecture of western art of building temples with sharp roofs ( at leat at Germany and france ) just learn that to made an alliance between Germany and Holy Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantio ) at 700 or 800 ac , the emperor gave his daughter to a German king as a bride ... She didnt want to go there because they were barbarians...the only agreement she arranged with her father in order to go there was to take with her architects, mechanics, scholars and other types, just to make a good living for herself..... that was the begining of german mechanic and architect
And as for the temples with sharp- conic roofs were hellenic << orthodox>> design , just had such roofs for the snow... kai o noon noeito

Re: Orthodoxy vs Catholic

Here is a very detailed break down of these differences (there are many, many differences). We are, I believe, the ONLY Church that does not use a translated bible. Our priests read from the original ancient Greek text of the New Testament.

Anyway, here is a good, explained list of differences (written by an Orthodox):

Well, orthodox and catolic is two religion with same root but different branch. Main differens is that catolic look at pope like god and built church with good apperance while orthodox don't have pope and built church for praying not for good apperance. One my friend tell me that in one catolic church people freely eat while priest read pray, it is maybe one contingency but decidedly orthodox is original christianity. Catolics was kill potential "vamire" in the medieval times in name of god, go to war (killing) in name of god and by the way burn orthodox Constantinople... :-(((
...but i hope, at one point in future time, catolic and orthodox can unite...
(my english is so bad but i hope you understand :-) )
