My Mood: | Cool Youtube Links I have tons of links on rebetika, from boards, to groups, to biographies with pictures, to music stores, to online radio stations, including one called Soura kai Mastoura on shoutcast.com that I adore. But I wanted to share two of my favourite youtube links with all of you as well as a few goodies at the end.
The first, I think, is the best I've seen so far. All are audio with pictures but these are the original songs by the original singers and some I've only found here. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
This guy has put up some incredible videos of rebetika and Smyrnaika. Among them is a documentary about the genre which came out in the 1980's. It's hosted by Anthony Quinn (who played Zorba) and is a bit romanticised but still enjoyable and it's completely in english. It's broken into ten parts which must be watched in order or they won't make sense. His other videos include things from Prodromos Tsaousakis (one of the later rebetes) when he was older, Stelios Vamvakaris (one of the sons of Markos, whom you can hear at the previous link) and many others. But he also has some things from other genres as well. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
Also, type "music of the outsiders" on the main youtube page for another decent documentary on rebetika in English. For one in Greek, try "To minore tis avgis", though that one's not really a documentary as much as a film. For individual videos put up by different people, type in Vassillis Tsitsanis, Sotiria Bellou (also Mpellou will give you some more), Giannis Papaioanou, Agathonas Iakovidis, Stelios Vamvakaris, Giannis Lembesis, Costas Papadopoulos and Iordanis Tsomidis. Note that the videos from Tsomidis on youtube aren't the best but they're still something. Enjoy. *smile* |
