| GR Elite | Re: Greek Singers in 2004 Athens Olympics I know Dalaras and Alexiou, they are not old at all for me. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. The older man has white hair. I can't remember the older woman if she has white hair also, but I remember her holding the micro nervously. |

| Admins | Re: Greek Singers in 2004 Athens Olympics I believe the old man you are referring to is Chronis Aidonidis. I think he is about 80 years old. He is a Thracian singer and he mostly sings traditional songs of his area, But he is known in all of Greece. He is often called "The nightingale of Thrace". "Aidoni" means nightingale in Greek and his last name happens to be Aidonidis :). This is from the closing ceremony:

| GR Elite | Re: Greek Singers in 2004 Athens Olympics Thank you, Ellinas, yes, that is him I referred to. How appropriate name! Isn't his voice something, at 80, imagine! Interesting that there are like that "local" singers. It is true that the song (music) sounds different than the Greek songs I am used to hear. |

| Admins | Re: Greek Singers in 2004 Athens Olympics That's a Thracian song. And the Byzantine influence is obvious I think. Also you can hear the lyric: "Philoi kalosorisate, Philoi agapimenoi....." which means "Welcome friends... dear friends...." That's why they chosed the song for the beginning of the ceremony. As for the old woman you mentioned I am not sure. Surely you aren't talking about Marinella? :D |

| GR Elite | Re: Greek Singers in 2004 Athens Olympics No, Marinella is my most favorite female singer, not only Greek but international. The singer I referred to I think she sang in front of an orchestra, and when I said old, she may be 70 or 75? |

| GR Elite | Re: Greek Singers in 2004 Athens Olympics Could it be Domna Samiou singing the Wedding Song? I saw the names in a link to metacafe but there was no video. Look what I found instead! Is the singer Samiou? This is a dance from Smyrna.
