Ok. I start first studying words and then i start reading finnish - greek dictionary. I have one popular children book in greek. Maybe that would help me. Ego enksero polikala ellinika. Do u know sites which can help me?
Listening to music (Greek artists at youtube.com) can teach you new words or sentences in addition to how they should sound like and allow one to more easily remember them. For translation between english use electronic dictionaries like freelang.net or Google translate.

Re: Learning greek

I think if you want to learn Greek, may as well go for the real Greek, not Greeklish. The first step I would say would be to learn the Greek alphabet. After that, you will be able to read Greek and it will be easier to learn it.

I have learned the Greek alphabet on my own and I listened to some tapes at the beginning. Then, I listened to songs, radio and TV. You just need patience, learn one word at a time. And you need to practice speaking it with someone. The difficulty lies in the grammar, not the vocabulary.

Re: Learning greek

I would just like to add for anyone trying to learn Greek that if they already know English or French, they already have an advantage as a lot of the common usage and scientific words have Greek roots, so it makes it much easier to learn compared to other languages.

So, Nikodimos, you already "know" some Greek without having even started yet.

Re: Learning greek

All the Latin and Germanic languages contain a big number of words of Hellenic origin. Various Greek words are contained in other languages too, like Semitic languages or Turkish, but it's more easy for the speakers of European languages because besides the words, the structure is closer to Greek.

However Finnish is a Turkic/Uralic language, so I am not sure how big the influnce of Greek is there. I don't know how similar they are in structure as well.
