Re: Modern Greek Army

Delivery to the Hellenic military of the 147 MILIS (Milan Lightweight Infrared System) completed

On March 23, 2006, the first batch of the MILIS (Milan Lightweight Infrared System)thermal sights was accepted by the Hellenic Army. These sights are manufactured in Greece by the local company Theon Sensors S.A. (Koropi, Greece) as part of thecontract signed with Sagem Défense Sécurité (SAFRAN Group) for the co-production of 147 thermal sights which are going to be used for the upgrade of theMILAN anti-tank system of the Hellenic Army. The ceremony occurred with thepresence of representatives of Euromissile and Sagem Défense Sécurité.As part of the contract, signed in October 2004 between the two companies, anactive burn-in thermal station of the latest technology was installed in the TheonSensors facility while the Theon Sensors personnel underwent training in the SagemDéfense Sécurité facilities, in France. The set up of the above co-production, fromSagem Défense Sécurité to Theon Sensors is a testimony of a successfulcooperation to satisfy the offset obligations of the French company to the GreekMoD to provide a technology transfer and a sub-contracting work. This joint projectaims at the co-production of at least 200 thermal sights. The Theon Sensors work includes the fabrication of the sight components, theassembly, the quality and the environmental as well as the final acceptance tests. The final acceptance tests are carried out with the presence of the Sagem DéfenseSécurité representatives. The program implementation is progressing as scheduledand up-to-now 35 thermal imagers have been delivered by Theon Sensors. It isestimated that the program will be implemented until the end of 2007.The MILIS thermal imager is a member of the MATIS third generation family ofthermal imagers currently developed and produced by Sagem Défense Sécurité.The MILIS uses an afocal type configuration which means that it does not have itsown aiming system but that it is attached on the MILAN day sight thus allowing theuse of the system at night or under low light conditions.

Re: Modern Greek Army

Paris calls for military angle to space policy

The European Union should develop a military element to its space activities to counter growing security threats, according to proposals drawn up by France.

Paris, which on Tuesday takes over the EU presidency, says Europe needs to counter threats from conventional military powers such as China and Russia as well as terrorism. To do so it needs to add a “political and security dimension” to European space policy, according to documents sent to EU governments ahead of a meeting later this month in French Guiana, home to the European launch pad.

“In Europe space policy has always been motivated by scientific and technical reasons. The US, Russia, China and so on are motivated by politics. Even so, Europe is the second or third biggest space power in the world. Using political drive as well, it would be even more powerful,” said a European diplomat familiar with the plans.

French ambitions range from setting up an EU spy satellite system to joining a US manned mission to Mars.

Paris wants to exploit synergies with existing civilian space projects. For example, Galileo, the €3.4bn ($5.4bn, £2.7bn) rival to the US-controlled global positioning system, is classed as a transport project, although it could be used for military operations. The same is true for the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security system, which shares data from satellites monitoring the climate and is covered by EU environment policy.

The Paris-based European Space Agency, which controls the EU’s space programme and whose members include Norway and Switzerland as well as 15 EU member states, said it was working “hand-in-hand” on the new strategy.

Franco Banacina, ESA spokesman, said a board meeting in November would map out “new programmes that take into account new dimensions in which we will be working like security and defence”. It wants to boost its €2.8bn annual budget.

There was no question of amending the 30-year-old body’s statutes that restrict it to peaceful activity, he added. “We are not talking about star wars.”

The EU will also attempt to head off a space arms race by pushing an EU “code of conduct” for space on the rest of the world. The document, expected to be ready by 2009, is partly a response to China’s missile attack on a weather satellite last year, which left millions of metal pieces hurtling through space before burning up on entry to the atmosphere.

The code will enshrine freedom of access to space for peaceful purposes while respecting the “rights of countries to legitimate defence”, according to the French proposals. A 40-year-old UN treaty is the only framework governing space.

France would invite others to join the six countries – France, Italy, Germany, Greece
, Belgium and Spain – that have already agreed to pool research for a new ground station to handle spy satellite signals called Musis.

The French plan may fall foul of Germany, which wants to develop its own national space industry. As the EU’s biggest paymaster it has been unenthusiastic about plans to pool resources, diplomats say.

Now that the US is heavily interested in militarizing space it will leave the EU and Russia no choice.

I hope they don't include the UK, then the US will have the classified info from the satellites who will promptly go and give it to the turks.

Re: Modern Greek Army

Theirs alot of rumors going around about what fighter or fighters Greece will purchase.

One think is for sure we are getting the Eurofighter Tranche 3.Theirs for some years now

Greek personal is germany being trained , maintenance etc.. on this jet fighter

According to reliable source the German airforce is preparing to deliver to Greece some

20-30 eurofighters ,when greece signs the contract by end of september the latest. When

we receive are aircraft we send the german ones back .Lets just hope we get co-production and tech

transfer for this deal. The germans better include some artillery and some Leopard 2A4 or

2A6 in the deal free of charge

The rafale we might see a purchase of 20 fighters. or some more mirage mk2 and

upgrade are old ones.
