My Mood: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Qatar Air, US firm eyeing Greece's Olympic Air-paper Qatar Air, US firm eyeing Greece's Olympic Air-paper Sat Nov 1, 2008 7:39am EDT Email | Print | Share| Reprints | Single Page | Recommend (0) [-] Text [+] ATHENS, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Qatar Airways and a US aircraft charter firm were among the interested parties for the sale of Greece's state-owned Olympic Airlines, daily Naftemporiki reported on Saturday. Citing unnamed sources, the paper said Qatar Airways, US aircraft charter firm Chrysler Aviation, Greek-US investors consortium York Capital/Olympic investors and a consortium of Greek shipowners and private equity funds have expressed initial interest in the ailing airline. Greece's conservative government launched a tender in September to split the loss-making carrier into three parts, the airline services along with the ground handling and the technical maintenance units, and sell them off. Investors had until the end of October to express an interest to bid. Five firms, including Goldair, Chrysler Aviation and Spain's Swissport and Flight Care, have submitted interest for Olympic's ground handling services, the paper added. Officials at Greece's Transport Ministry declined to comment on the report. The government said on Friday it would announce Olympic's short-listed applicants early next week. Interested parties will then be allowed to conduct due diligence on Olympic and submit non-binding bids by the end of the month. Greece aims to conclude the tender by the end of 2008, ending years of failed attempts to privatise Olympic. The plan has been approved by the European Commission, which agreed to suspend action over illegal state subsidies if the sale went ahead. Lazard, NBG International, Alpha Bank and Emporiki Bank are advising the government on the tender. In an article in another newspaper, Greek Transport Minister Costis Hatzidakis defended the 1.3 billion euro plan for the sale of Olympic, saying the privatisation would be to the Greek people's benefit. "Greek taxpayers will be benefited, as they will have to pay much less money than what they would pay if we kept the current ailing and loss-making Olympic," Hatzidakis wrote in Kathimerini newspaper. Olympic Airlines carried 6.2 million passengers in 2007 to 36 cities and islands in Greece and 37 destinations in Europe, Asia, North America and Africa. It has losses of over 2 million euros a day. Companies interested in Olympic's operations are Athens Airways, Chrysler Aviation, Fouad El Ghanim Group, MyAir, Qatar Airways, Sky Europe and Sky One. For ground handling the companies interested are: Athens Airways, Ellaktor, Fouad El Ghanim Group, Goldair, Hellenic Cargo Group, and Swissport. For Olympic's technical maintenance, the bidders are: Athens Airways, Iberia and Fouad El Ghanim Group. Transport Ministry officials said Thursday that 22 further potential bidders had requested that their names not be made public. The government plans to liquidate Olympic and transfer most of its 8,100 staff to other public sector jobs. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. My Mood: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Qatar Air, US firm eyeing Greece's Olympic Air-paper Strong airline interest surprises Greece By Kerin Hope in Athens Published: November 8 2008 02:00 | Last updated: November 8 2008 02:00 Greece reported unexpectedly strong interest in the privatisation of its lossmaking state-run airline this week, in spite of union protests over plans to lay off the carrier's 8,500-strong workforce. Given the turbulent conditions in the sector, officials were surprised to receive almost 40 expressions of interest from airlines as well as private equity and hedge funds. "We've never seen such a positive response," said Costas Hatzidakis, transport minister. Five previous attempts to find a strategic investor for Olympic Airways failed because of a long-running dispute with the European Union over illegal state aid, and strong opposition from the airline's 25 unions. This time, however, is different. The European Commission has already approved a privatisation plan allowing the write-off of more than €2.6bn ($3bn, £2bn) in accumulated debt. It has also suspended court action over the repayment of €850m in illegal state aid. This week, to the accompaniment of protests outside parliament, MPs approved the first reading of a law to shut down the airline and privatise its assets. These include the Olympic brand name, landing slots abroad and the distinctive six-ring logo chosen by the late shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis, the airline's founder. The government's decision to dismiss the entire workforce between next January and April "should remove the other major obstacle to a deal", said a banker who took part in a previous privatisation effort. "A slimmed-down Olympic could have a profitable future as a medium-sized regional carrier," the banker added. Olympic employees have been holding weekly sit-ins on one of two runways at Athens international airport. They have blockaded the transport ministry and staged marches to parliament. The union action, including frequent strikes by flight crews, has contributed to a sharp decline in passenger numbers. All its international routes are loss-making and it has ceded market share on domestic routes to Aegean Airlines, an aggressive private competitor. Olympic reportedly loses about €2m a day, although it has not published a balance sheet since 2005. The government says it will choose an investor to buy a majority stake by the end of this year so that Olympic can be relaunched at the start of the tourist season in April. As many as 13 bidders have shown interest in taking over Olympic's flight operations, with another 25 interested in the ground handling and technical maintenance divisions. Qatar Airways is seen as the front-runner after Costas Karamanlis, the Greek prime minister, confirmed the Gulf carrier's interest in acquiring a European hub during a visit last month to Doha. Manolis Patestos, president of OSPA, the union federation, says protests will continue "until the government drops the privatisation plan and gives us our jobs back". Mr Patestos cites a recent opinion poll showing that 57 per cent of Greeks believe the state should retain a stake in the carrier - acquired from Onassis shortly before his death in 1975 - to ensure that its public service role continues. "Greece is a special case because people living on the islands depend on Olympic for communications, especially in winter," he said. Olympic's buyer would be expected to rehire younger former employees in all three divisions. But the re-launched network would be reduced by one-third to comply with EU competition regulations. To soften the blow, the government is offering Olympic's 4,000 permanent employees a choice of early retirement or a job elsewhere in the public sector. Its 4,500 seasonal workers, based mainly on the islands, would be given preferential treatment if they applied for civil service positions, in line with a government pledge that no former Olympic worker would remain jobless. Αυτοι ειναι οι περιβοητοι "ΒΟΛΕΜΕΝΟΙ" που αυτες τις μερες κανουν πορειες και απεργιες οπως εκαναν και οι συντεχνοι τους στον ΟΤΕ, στα Λιμανια και σε λιγο καιρο θα κανουν και στα τραινα (σημειωση: τα τραινα εχουν επισης 1.2 mil euros loss per day and the list goes on). | ||||||||||||||
