Swedish parliament recognizes genocide of Armenians in Ottoman Empire

STOCKHOLM, March 11 (Itar-Tass) – Swedish parliament has adopted a resolution that recognizes the genocide of Armenians, Assyrians and Pontic Greeks in the Ottoman Empire in 1915.

The resolution was put up for voting Thursday morning and its discussion continued until almost the end of the workday.

The draft was submitted by opposition forces – the Left Party, the Green Party, the Social Democratic Workers’ Party and several MPs from the Liberal People’s Party and the Christian Democratic Party.

The resolution was endorsed by a slight majority of votes. It recognizes the extermination of 1.5 million Armenians, 250,000 to 500,000 Assyrians and about 350,000 Pontic Greeks in the last phase of Turkey’s imperial history.

The opponents of recognition of the genocide came up with explanations for their position.

One of them, Gustav Blix of the Moderate Coalition Party, told Radio Sweden that it is not politicians that should write history.

He indicated that decisions on such knotty issues should be taken by international law agencies.

Blix fears the recognition of genocide may hamper the incipient process of rapprochement between Armenia and Turkey.

The radio recalled in this connection that a Turkish parliamentary delegation, which made a visit to Sweden a short while ago, warned the recognition of genocide might do a serious blow to Swedish-Turkish relations.

That's awesome yet shocking too because i thought the Scandinavian countries were completely bought by the turks. There was that politician who supporting the Cyprus genocide a while back.

That's excellent news. That makes 2 recognitions since the American vote, the first being Catalonia (spanish province) and now Sweden. Soon all the genocides committed by Turkey will be recognized by most countries in the world. We already have their moral support and their support behind closed doors it's now time to put it on paper.

Thats great that they recognize the Pontic Greek genocide. Their should be more recognition on it just like the way the Armenians do it.

Koumoutsakos on the Pontian Greek Genocide Memorial Day

Ruling New Democracy (ND) party MEP candidate George Koumoutsakos stressed that “May 19 has been declared by the Greek Parliament as Pontian Greek Genocide Memorial Day. We honor their memory and do not forget their sacrifice.”
“When Turkey declares - and this is positive as an intention - a policy of zero problems with its neighbors, it is time to launch a parallel effort of zero problems with its history as well,” he pointed out.

PASOK leader issues message

Main opposition PASOK party leader George Papandreou issued a message for May 19, the Day of Memory for the Genocide of the Black Sea Greeks.
"May 19 is a day of honour and of historical memory for the thousands of Greeks who were sacrificed in the harsh years of persecution and uprooting in Pontos. It is clear that the history of a nation cannot be offsetted and cannot be written off. The responsibility of defending historical memory constitutes a demand of historical self-knowledge. A nation without a memory is a nation without a future," he stressed.
Papandreou further underlined that "the PASOK government had set since 1994, May 19 as a day of memory for the genocide of the Pontians."

Η Τουρκία ανακάλεσε τον πρεσβευτή της στη Σουηδία και ακύρωσε την προγραμματισμένη σύνοδο κορυφής μεταξύ των δύο χωρών, εξαιτίας της απόφασης του σουηδικού κοινοβουλίου να αναγνωρίσει ως γενοκτονία τη σφαγή των Αρμενίων από τους Οθωμανούς.

Η απόφαση ελήφθη μόλις μία εβδομάδα μετά την ανάκληση του Τούρκου πρέσβη στις ΗΠΑ, εξαιτίας ψηφίσματος Επιτροπής της Βουλής των Αντιπροσώπων για το ίδιο θέμα.

Η Σουηδία είναι ένας από τους ισχυρότερους υποστηρικτές των προσπαθειών της Τουρκίας για ένταξη στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση.

«Καταδικάζουμε αυτή την απόφαση, που ελήφθη για πολιτικές σκοπιμότητες», δήλωσε ο Τούρκος πρωθυπουργός, Ταγίπ Ερντογάν, αναφερόμενος στην απόφαση του σουηδικού κοινοβουλίου.

«Δεν ανταποκρίνεται στη στενή φιλία των δύο εθνών. Ανακαλούμε τον πρεσβευτή μας για διαβουλεύσεις», ανακοίνωσε ο Ερντογάν, προσθέτοντας ότι δεν θα πραγματοποιηθεί και η σύνοδος κορυφής Τουρκίας-Σουηδίας, που ήταν προγραμματισμένη για τις 17 Μαρτίου.

Η απόφαση του σουηδικού κοινοβουλίου να αναγνωρίσει τη γενοκτονία των Αρμενίων ελήφθη με οριακή πλειοψηφία- 131 βουλευτές υπερψήφισαν τη σχετική πρόταση και 130 την καταψήφισαν. Η πρόταση έβρισκε αντίθετα τα κόμματα της κεντροδεξιάς κυβέρνησης, αλλά τρεις κυβερνητικοί βουλευτές την υπερψήφισαν.


Η Τουρκία

Αναξιόπιστο χαρακτήρισε ο πρόεδρος της Τουρκίας, Αμπντουλάχ Γκιούλ, το ψήφισμα του σουηδικού κοινοβουλίου, που αναγνωρίζει ως γενοκτονία τη σφαγή των Αρμενίων από τους Οθωμανούς.

"Όλοι γνωρίζουμε πώς λαμβάνονται αυτές οι αποφάσεις.
Δεν έχει (το ψήφισμα) καμία αξιοπιστία για εμάς", δήλωσε, σήμερα, ο Τούρκος πρόεδρος, απαντώντας σε σχετική ερώτηση, σύμφωνα με το τουρκικό πρακτορείο ειδήσεων "Anadolu".
"Αυτοί που έλαβαν αυτή την απόφαση και που ψήφισαν υπέρ του ψηφίσματος δεν ήταν ιστορικοί", τόνισε ο κ. Γκιούλ.

Στο μεταξύ, αναβλήθηκε και η επίσκεψη του πρωθυπουργού της Τουρκίας, Ρετζέπ Ταγίπ Ερντογάν, στη Σουηδία, ενώ ανακλήθηκε στην 'Αγκυρα και ο Τούρκος πρέσβης στη Στοκχόλμη, Ζεργούν Κορουτούκ, για διαβουλεύσεις.
Σε ανακοίνωσή της, η τουρκική κυβέρνηση "εκφράζει την απογοήτευσή της και καταδικάζει με τον πλέον σθεναρό τρόπο την έγκριση του ψηφίσματος του σουηδικού κοινοβουλίου, το οποίο υπαινίσσεται ότι ορισμένοι λαοί έπεσαν θύματα γενοκτονίας κατά τη διάρκεια της τελευταίας περιόδου της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας".
Στην ανακοίνωση αναφέρεται ακόμη ότι η απόφαση αυτή του σουηδικού κοινοβουλίου "δεν έχει βάση" και σημειώνεται πως "είναι προφανές ότι, αυτή η απόφαση ελήφθη με γνώμονα ορισμένα πολιτικά συμφέροντα ενόψει των εκλογών που θα λάβουν χώρα στη Σουηδία, τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2010".
Στην προσωπική του ιστοσελίδα, ο πρωθυπουργός της Τουρκίας, Ρετζέπ Ταγίπ Ερντογάν, αναφέρει ακόμη- μεταξύ άλλων- πως "το ψήφισμα δεν ανταποκρίνεται στις στενές φιλικές σχέσεις μεταξύ των δύο λαών μας".

Ο Σουηδός υπουργός Εξωτερικών, Καρλ Μπιλντ εκτίμησε ότι η ψήφος αυτή θα περιπλέξει τις προσπάθειες για εξομάλυνση των σχέσεων μεταξύ Τουρκίας και Αρμενίας.

«Η απόφαση δεν βοηθάει επίσης τη συζήτηση στην Τουρκία, που γίνεται ολοένα και πιο ανοικτή και ανεκτική, καθώς πλησιάζει προς την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση», εκτίμησε ο Σουηδός υπουργός Εξωτερικών.

Ο πρέσβης της Τουρκίας στη Σουηδία, Ζεργκούν Κορουτουρκ, εξέφρασε την απογοήτευσή του για την απόφαση αυτή και εκτίμησε ότι θα έχει "δραστικές συνέπειες" στις διμερείς σχέσεις.



Πάντως τουρκική κυβερνητική πηγή ανέφερε στο πρακτορείο Reuters ότι ο Τούρκος διπλωμάτης θα επιστρέψει σύντομα στη Σουηδία.
