Greek reporter arrested in Iran

A 30-year-old Greek journalist who has been covering Iran’s disputed presidential election for US newspaper The Washington Times has been arrested, an official at the Culture Ministry in Tehran told foreign reporters yesterday.

Iason Athanasiadis, who has contributed to the Greek newspapers Kathimerini and Athens News in the past, was arrested at the end of last week at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport,

Family of British-Greek journalist plea for Iran release


The parents of a British-Greek journalist detained in Iran appealed for his release today insisting that their son was not a spy.

Ο Πρόεδρος του ΛΑ.Ο.Σ κ. Γ. Καρατζαφέρης προέβη σήμερα στην ακόλουθη δήλωση:





«Τη Δευτέρα το πρωί, ζήτησα και συνάντησα στα Γραφεία του Κόμματος, τον εξοχότατο Πρέσβη του Ιράν.

Του ζήτησα την άμεση απελευθέρωση του Έλληνα δημοσιογράφου που κρατείται στις φυλακές της Τεχεράνης, με βαριές κατηγορίες που επισύρουν πολυετείς καθείρξεις.

Του ανέπτυξα μια σειρά επιχειρημάτων και του εξήγησα το κατεπείγον της υποθέσεως.

Ο κύριος Πρέσβης επιφυλάχθηκε να μιλήσει με την Κυβέρνησή του.

Σήμερα το πρωί, ο Πρέσβης του Ιράν, επικοινώνησε με τον αναπληρωτή Πρόεδρο του Κόμματος, τον πρέσβη κ. Γεωργίου και μετέφερε την απόφαση της Κυβερνήσεως του.

Ο Ιάσων Αθανασιάδης θα απελευθερωθεί τις προσεχείς ώρες.

Χαιρετίζουμε αυτήν την απόφαση της Κυβερνήσεως του Ιράν, χαιρετίζουμε ότι ένας δημοσιογράφος δεν μπορεί να διώκεται για πράξεις οι οποίες αφορούν τη λειτουργία του επαγγέλματός του.

Πιστεύω ότι ήταν μια καλή στιγμή για την Ελληνική πολιτική πρωτοβουλία. Θέλω να ελπίζω ότι δεν θα υπάρξουν και άλλες τέτοιες στιγμές, συλλήψεως δημοσιογράφων. Ευχαριστώ πολύ».

This one is a canary with double plumage and two songs. In the UK he is , or he poses as a pucker englishman. In Greece, he is of course a throughbred Greek. In foreign countries where he gets into trouble with his reporting or under reporting he qualifies himself with the best nationality that can get him out of the hot spot. Now if he is a Greek, he has a better chance of getting out of Iran sooner, than if he is " found to be a sterling englishman".

I was thinking the same thing but i think what is more important is his political persuasion. I'm not familiar with this reporter but if he is a pro-NWO reporter like an Englishman he is in a lot more hot water than if he is a more neutral to NWO reporting. I don't want to sound cold hearted but if he is a pro-NWO spewing out the standard lines of the typical western media then Iran should treat him similar to the regular British press.....

But it seems obvious to me the US/NWO is interfering. They were asking if elections we're going to be "fair" before the elections began. Palestine elected Hamas and the US didn't recognize it. Russia elected Putin and the west started showing "anti-democracy" reporting when they didn't like Putin. THe west interfered with those old soviet bloc countries too.

Tehran to free Greek reporter
Iason Athanasiadis, the 30-year-old Greek correspondent for the Washington Times who had been covering Iran’s disputed presidential election until he was arrested in Teheran two weeks ago, is to be freed by Sunday morning, Iran’s ambassador in Athens has told Kathimerini.

“We are pleased to confirm that within the next 48 hours the Greek journalist will have been freed,” Mehdi Honardoost told Kathimerini yesterday morning.

Last Tuesday an Iranian Culture Ministry official had confirmed the arrest of Athanasiadis at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport but without clarifying what charges the reporter faced.

In an interview with Kathimerini, Honardoost did not elaborate about the case of Athanasiadis, who has in the past contributed to the Greek newspapers Kathimerini and Athens News. The diplomat referred to an “emotional reaction” to the Iranian election fallout by a section of the Iranian population, claiming that this outpouring had been exploited by foreign powers as part of an “organized conspiracy” against Iran.
