1832: Augustinos Kapodistrias is named Governor of Greece to serve until the arrival of the new King.
1838: By Royal decree, March 25th becomes a national holiday in Greece.
1882: Charilaos Trikoupis forms a government.
1905: Cretan revolutionaries declare Union ("Enosis") with Greece.
1926: Pavlos Kountouriotis resigns the Presidency of Greece to protest the excesses of the Theodoros Pangalos regime.
1989: Menios Koutsogiorgas resigns from the PASOK government in the aftermath of the Bank of Crete scandal.
1995: The Revolutionary Organization 17 November launch a rocket attack against the TV studios of MEGA during the evening news broadcast. There is property damage but no casualties.
2007: Russia, Bulgaria and Greece signed a tripartite inter-state agreement in Athens, opening the way for the construction of the Burgas-Alexandroupolis pipeline, connecting the western Black Sea with the Mediterranean.

630: Second Elevation of the Holy Cross, when Emperor Heraclius entered Jerusalem amidst great rejoicing, and together with Patriarch Zacharios (609-633), transferred the Cross of Christ with great solemnity into the temple of the Resurrection.
1916: Retreating Serbian forces land in Kerkyra.
1935: A fire destroys the city centre of Edessa.
1956: EOKA attempt to assassinate Cyprus military governor, Sir John Harding. The attempt fails as the time bomb, under the governor's bed, fails to go off.
1997: Miltiades Ewert resigns as head of the New Democracy Party

  • 1949: Communists blow up the power station of Xylokastro but are slain by national forces.
  • 1983: In a letter to the Police, an organisation called "Anti-terrorist Struggle" assumes responsibility for the murder of publisher Tzortzis Athanasiadis.
  • 1987: Odysseus Angelis, a member of the junta of 1967-1974, is found hanged in his prison cell - a suicide.
  • 1992: 20,000 Greeks demonstrate in Bonn, Germany, on the issue of Macedonia.

  • 364: Valens is proclaimed emperor in the east. His brother, Valentinian I, retains rule over the west.
  • 1821: Three days after the proclamation of the Greek Revolution, a provisional government is formed in the liberated city of Kalamata.
  • 1832: Augustinos Kapodistrias is forced to resign from his post as Governor of Greece.
  • 1921: During the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922), battles break out along the Afyon Karahisar - Eskisehir line.
  • 1930: The Turkish government announces that henceforth Constantinople shall be called Istanbul. Angora is officially named Ankara.
  • 1957: EOKA fighter, Stylianos Lenas, who was wounded in a firfight with British soldiers on February 17, succumbs to his wounds. He is buried without a funeral at the Imprisoned Tombs in the Central Jail of Nicosia.
  • 1964: The Turkish government starts expelling ethnic Greeks. During the 1964, almost 10,000 Greeks will be forced out of Turkey.
  • 1964: Saudi King Ibn Saud is ousted by his brother Faisal. He will take refuge in Greece where he will spend the rest of his life.
  • 1972: Dictator George Papadopoulos becomes: Royal Regent, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, Defence Minister and President of the Greek Parliament.
  • 1994: EU representative Van der Brook asks Greek PM Andreas Papandreou to lift all the measures his government has taken against FYROM.
  • 2003: Greek police put an end to the hijacking of a Turkish jet which landed at Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport. All 192 passengers and 11 crew members are safe.

  • 1822: The massacre of Chios takes place during the Greek War of Independence. An estimated 100,000 persons are killed or sold into slavery.
  • 1911: A French military delegation under Gen. Eydoux, arrives in Greece. Its task is to reform the Hellenic Army.
  • 1922: During the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922), the Sultan's army join forces with the Kemalists.
  • 1926: The law prohibiting short skirts is abolished in Greece.
  • 1946: The first post-WW II elections are held in Greece. Stylianos Gonatas' Laiko Komma emerges victorious. The elections were boycotted by the Communist Party of Greece.
  • 1947: Brig Gen A.S. Parker transfers military command of the Dodecanese islands to Vice Admiral Pericles Ioannidis of the Hellenic Navy.
  • 1965: A strong earthquake (6.8 on the Richter scale) strikes Agrinio and the surrounding area.
  • 1982: Composer Vangelis Papathanasiou is awarded the Oscar for the score of "Chariots of Fire".

  • 1854: Tsamis Karatasos leads a revolt of Greeks in the Chalkidiki peninsula.
  • 1900: Prince George is named High Commissioner of Crete.
  • 1944: Leftist officers and troops of the Greek 1st Brigade revolt in Alexandria.
  • 1947: King George II of Greece dies suddenly of a heart attack. He is succeeded by his brother King Paul.
  • 1951: The Greek Parliament approves the law giving women the right to vote.
  • 1955: The EOKA campaign begins in Cyprus with a proclamation from General "Digenis" and several acts of sabotage.
  • 1993: A defendant is shot and wounded and his lawyer is killed, during a trial for negligent homicide. The culprit - who kills himself afterwards - is the father of the man whom the defendant killed in a traffic accident.
