Events
  • 1913: The first massacre at Doxato takes place during the Second Balkan War, as Bulgarian troops kill 650 inhabitants of this Drama prefecture town before burning it to the ground. A second massacre would take place in the same town during World War II (see September 29).
  • 1919: The Greek Army evacuates Aydini.
  • 1930: The Law School of the University of Thessaloniki is established.
  • 1948: A strong earthquake (6.4 on the Richter scale) strikes Lefkada adding to the destruction of another earthquake on April 22 of the same year.
  • 1955: EOKA fighter, Markos Drakos, is arrested by the British. He will escape three months later.
  • 1972: The Military Government of Greece passes a "quickie divorce" law. Dictator George Papadopoulos will avail himself of his own law to divorce his first wife.
  • 1984: Thessaloniki is twinned with Lemesos, Cyprus.
  • 1993: Russian President Boris Yeltsin visits Greece.

  • 1961: Pele scores twice as World champions FC Santos defeat Panathinaikos 3-2

  • 1821: A Greek force under Markos Botsaris defeats the Turks at the Battle of Komboti, near Arta.
  • 1948: The Corinth Canal, which was rendered useless by the retreating Germans, is put into operation again.
  • 1960: Athens daily "To Vima" announces it will no longer print two obsolete diacritics of the Greek language: the grave accent ("vareia") and the iota subscript ("ypogegrammeni").
  • 2002: Greek police locate the main hideout of the Revolutionary Organisation 17 November.

  • 1949: Marshall Tito closes the border between Yugoslavia and Greece. This action led to the rapid defeat of the communists during the Greek Civil War.
  • 1976: Greek Cypriot Kostas Georgiou, better known as "Colonel Callan", is executed by a firing squad for war crimes during the Angolan civil war.
  • 2007: AKEL pull out of the coalition that has governed Cyprus for the past 4.5 years.
