Greek-Turkish Festival

The 7th Greek-Turkish Friendship Festival will open in Aydin, Turkey on Saturday with participations from Turkey, Greece and other European countries, and will be continued on the Greek island of Fourni, eastern Aegean, on June 9-10.

Scholars, artists, students, journalists and businessmen will beparticipating in the event, held under the auspices of the local governments and co-organized by the associations Nea Dafni and DEFNE in Athens and Istanbul respectively.

This year's theme is "Water and Light" featuring activities relative to the problems of wildfires, marine pollution and the destruction of natural wealth, while environmentalists will address participants and present their views.

DEFNE and Nea Dafni is the first notable non governmental organization based on both sides of the Aegean established to create a new functional model promoting peace between the two countries. It was founded in 2002 by prominent Greeks and Turks and since then it has hosted numerous significant joint programmes bringing the two peoples closer.

As it looks like religious faculties are forbidden in Turkey. This is a part of the Kemalist effort to make Turkey a "secular state". In my opinion this is a dictatorial policy by the Turkish state, but it has not to do with the Greeks, it's a general policy. About the first part I agree.

However I don't think that the Turkish and Greek governments have anything to do with the festival the article mentions.

The article mentioned scholars, businessmen, students and artists. So it seems to be the intellectual elite and of course the very common liberal artist/student community.

Re: Greek-Turkish Festival

These are just political ploys to be made to make Turkey "look" moderate to the west. Turkey's atrocious human rights records are only known to the region.

That's what I said, meaning that the political issues between Turkey and Greece are not related with this. What is characterized by aggresiveness against Greece is the Turkish regime, and they have no relation with the festival.

Please don’t take offence, but you need to find a better translator.
