Re: Can you read Ancient Greek?

In olden times, students had to learn Ancient Greek and Latin in the French Baccalaureate program. I was lucky not to have to study them, as they were taken out of the program subsequently. I think though that knowledge of Modern Greek is a helpful boost to learning many Western languages, and should be offered as an elective course in high schools.

Re: Can you read Ancient Greek?

All the Greeks can read the ancient Greek dialects but the matter is what they are going to understand

Re: Can you read Ancient Greek?

It is easy to read but you cant understand the meaning...
Ofcourse, the most easy dialect is the Attica which was spoken from 400bc and on... its similar with what we speak today

Re: Can you read Ancient Greek?

You mean "read" as being able to decipher the alphabet (same one as Modern Greek)?

Then, I can say I can read Modern Greek but not be able to understand the meaning. Winking smilie

Re: Can you read Ancient Greek?

Yes, the alphabet is the same. Except two or three letters that used to exist in some ancient Greek dialects while they don't in Demotic Greek.

Yes,something like that but the conclusion you will have after reading will be far away than what the writer wanted to say....

Ohh, i remembered something else....
Thousands years ago , before the hellenic alphabet took its form, people were using letters like ieroglyphics or druidics...
For example, they had a letter like that (Q) {its an example not a real one}
and they were reading that like qa , or qe, or qu .
The astonishing fact is that many words we thought are modern , actually are too old.

We say today ΚΟΥΤΣΟΥΡΟ ( KUTSURO) and ΞΥΛΟ (KSELO = WOOD)
Both words are in use today , the first one is used in villages and is a demotic type...

But if you write down the word Kutsuro , using the pro-alphabet writing
you will see "Ku-su-ro" and read Kselo....

I think i made it clear...no?

Re: Can you read Ancient Greek?

Very interesting comparison, Apollyon, thanks. If I understand well, it seems then that it is the way the old alphabet letters are pronounced that is different.

Similarly, I wonder if in English, for example, people used to pronounce "thou" as "you", and the word was modified into you.
