Re: Greek Dances

Indeed, Ellinas, they are pretty different. I like the hasapiko a lot.

Thanks for showing those rythms. Greek music is less of a mystery to me now.

Re: Greek Dances

I am just adding that they are some more rythms which are famous and not included in the list, like Syrto for example. I could not find a midi of them, that's why they aren't included.

Re: Greek Dances

Do you happen to know an example of a song with Syrto? I would be interested to hear too, if you don't mind.

Syrto is a quick and happy rythm, similar to tsifteteli. It is very popular in Aegean music. Here is a Syrto song in midi:

Notice the rythm in the backround.
And here is an mp3 Syrto song:

By the way Hasapiko in Greek means "Butcher's" :D. It is called like this because it is used to be popular among the butchers guilds in Constantinople the past centuries.

Re: Greek Dances

Thanks, Ellinas, for the midi and the song. Although I downloaded the song, I have not been able to open it, I don't know why. It asked me with which program I want to open it.

Really, that's what it means? I prefer Hasapiko better.

Which programme do you use to play audio files? Windows Media Player? Just chose the programme and the file will play normally I assume.

Re: Greek Dances

Thanks for the tip, Ellinas. I asked because the computer never asks that question before, the file just pops up and plays when you double click on it.

Re: Greek Dances

Greek dancing is great if they know how to dance it. I personally dont dance period only because I dont know how.

Re: Greek Dances

Are there dances only for women and dances only for men, Prokomenos? I find that there seems to be more dances for men. Not that I mind.

So is Mrs. Proko part of a dancing group that dances at Greek events?
