Danish man brings back Athena artifact

A 4th century BC sculpted fragment of the ancient goddess Athena, removed from Greece in the late 19th century, was returned yesterday by a Danish historian.

The fragment, depicting the torso of the goddess Athena, was taken to Denmark in 1897 by the Danish war correspondent Alexander Svenstrup, who gave it to the family of historian Paul Hartvigson, Culture Minister Giorgos Voulgarakis told a presentation ceremony in Athens.

“My uncle Carsten Dahl inherited this 30 years ago and... wanted to return it before he died,” Hartvigson told Agence France-Presse. “It’s been in our family for 97 years... it was time it came back,” said Hartvigson, who came to Athens instead of Dahl, whose health is poor.

Voulgarakis highlighted the “tremendous symbolic significance” of Dahl’s gesture, adding that it vindicates Greece’s efforts to reclaim missing artifacts.

He should have been arrested on the spot for having that in his possession. I like how it say it was "removed" from Greece, and not stolen. At least it's back where it belongs.

In possession of stolen goods. He could get arrested I think. Sort it all out later. Whenever I read any stories of Greek artifacts stolen and being in someones family, I always think how prideless can they be? I mean they are basically acknowledging they don't have anything of their own and are willing to hold onto and pass down a piece of another cultures' greatness.

In this case, at least the old piece of crap gave it back. And don't tell me you wouldn't want to beat the sh*t out of those people who had it all this time.

Re: Danish man brings back Athena artifact

I think it was great of Paul Hartvigson to give them back. This is just like the case of the Elgin marbles in the Duveen Gallery of the British Museum. At least Hartvigson did the right thing.
