Elgin is a thief. | They are sculptures from the pediments of the Parthenon, not "marbles". This is how the English called them to gegrade them and unfortunately I've seen many Greeks calling them like this. |

Made out of marble so it's not too insane to call them that. So long as whatever they are called mentions their true and rightful origins. |

The important thing is that they are returned to Greece.

The important thing is that they are returned to Greece. | As I've said before, the fact that the 2012 Olympics will take place in London, is a good chance for Greece to press about the return of the sculptures. But our government choses the pathetic stance in one more issue. |

My Mood: | Re: Danish man brings back Athena artifact I remember at the Greek archelogical sites, at least Ancient Olympia, that if one is caught with stones or any artifact, it will result in jail time. So maybe, this Danish historian returned the Greek artifacts becasue he might've been facing jail time if he didn't. |

If Greece could charge someone living in Denmark with possessing artifacts, then they could do the same to the British Museum. I have not heard anything about that being a possibility.

Yes, I think you are right about Elgin having gotten permission from the Turks. They cared so much about Greek antiquities that at one time they stored explosives in the Parthenon! Given the severe damage to the Parthenon from the 1687 explosion and millenia of neglect, might Elgin have thought he was helping to protect these carvings by bringing them back to Britain?

No one really knows.

They sustained some damage from that storage. |
