Well the Greek church lost most of its power thanks to the present government. So whether they want it or not they have no say. To be honest Im sure they definately do not want to see a mosque in a Christian land. Let them go home to their lands to worship.
I think from the church's pont of view is that they wouldn't be getting any new members, and might lose a few to the "Gods."

Re: Zeus is worshipped again

Actually the Church lost most of the power because of the past government, the one of Simitis. He was not an Orthodox Christian himself, he was a Jew and he did everything he could to seperate the Church from the state.
Let's see if the "Orthodox Christian" Karamanlis will finish what Simitis started.

Now regarding the mosque, the Church did not express officially any discomfort about the issue but they are many people under the Church who are against it. Personally I am not against the construction with passion, but I disagree with the area they chosed, Votanikos.

Re: Zeus is worshipped again

Because Votanikos is an area with great historical importance. The ancient times it was densely inhabited and they were many activities there. Everything in this area must be Hellenic.

Today Votanikos is one of the most bad-looking areas of Athens as it is full of old factories and warehouses. There is currently under research a project to "reform" the area by creating a huge athletic centre there with the center being the new extra-luxurious stadium of Panathinaikos. The mosque is going to be build nearby.
Many people doubt if any of these two two projects is going to be finished because when the bulldozers start work they will find buried ruins and artifacts for sure, but if the constructors want to, they can hide the event and bury them again under the new buildings.

Re: Zeus is worshipped again

Yes, Votanikos was also a pitch for the manges. Votanikos and Piraeus were the the two major pitches of the manges in Attica in the early 20th century. Even today you can find shops with nargiledes etc. at Votanikos and the surrounding area, but nothing like the older times.

To fix up the area, maybe a shop strictly for kombologoia, bagleria, etc Maybe even a museum dedicated to the counter-culture of the manges, etc, ??? Kali ithea??

If the "reformation" of Votanikos area will finally take place, such a store/museum would be a good idea, near the new museum of Panathinaikos which is possibly going to be built there. But let's see what will happen: if the Archaeological Ministry gets involved, I can't see any new buildings raised in Votanikos in the near future.
