Revolutionary lens produced in Cyprus for the first time

A NEW lens for prescription glasses has just been successfully produced on the island for the first time. According to the company responsible for the brand locally, the lens is expected a revolutionise the industry.

The high-tech lens is known as “FreeForm” and is custom-made to suit the patient’s visual needs especially when it comes to progressive lenses, says Jim Kounnas, Senior Optometrist and CEO of Space Frontiers Ltd.

Kounnas said that the new lens “promises to deliver benefits to patients not previously available in Cyprus”. This, he says, is because the prescription is made on the back surface of the lens, far closer to the cornea and therefore producing more natural vision than ever before.

He said the results are significant: far greater field of view making driving safer and reading significantly more comfortable than ever before, less distortion especially at the periphery, giving clearer vision and thinner and lighter lenses”.

The uniqueness of the lens is such that “the patient’s initials are laser etched on each lens proving the lenses don’t come from mass-produced lots imported from overseas”.

What is more, whereas ‘top brand’ varifocals are usually priced between €250-500, the new technology lenses are less expensive, being priced at around €120 “for significantly wider fields of view”.

Kounnas hopes that the immediate availability of these new lenses will “benefit the people both visually and financially”, while this new product “now places Cyprus in the most advanced position worldwide in the eye care industry”.

It always makes me feel good to see Greeks still contributing to the fields of science, engineering and medicine as we have done for thousands of years!
