Greek diet has ingredients to cut cancer risk

PEOPLE who adopt just two elements of a Mediterranean diet can greatly cut their risk of developing cancer.

A diet rich in olive oil, fruits, vegetables and oily fish is already known to protect against heart disease.

But now experts writing in the British Journal of Cancer have found it also cuts the risk of developing any cancers.

People who adopted the diet at least six ways cut their risk of cancer by 22%.

But even those who adopted just two elements could cut their chances by 12%.

Examples included substantially decreasing meat intake, increasing vegetable intake - and using olive oil instead of butter.

The biggest effect, resulting in a 9% risk reduction, appeared to be from consuming more of the type of fats found in olive oil, than those found in chips, biscuits and cakes.

A total of 25,623 Greek people took part in the research over a period of eight years.

They were asked about their diet through questionnaires on 150 different types of food and drink.

Trained interviewers assisted people to fill in their questionnaires.

The researchers also found the association between diet and decreased cancer risk was stronger for women than men.

Greek olive oil is known to be the best of all oils and very good for your health. I like Greek black olives but not olive oil, especially not in my salads. Do the Greeks make oil mixtures like salad dressings also? I like a lot salad dressings.

My friend , olive oil is the best dressing for salads and generally u can find it in every greek dish... the rest oils, mayoness ,ketchup etc are too bad for health.
We are used to the taste of lolive oil and we cant do without it.

Olive tree is blessed . It feeds people, its brances are a gift for the winners head, even the gps signal gets stronger while you are near tha tree...

Olive oil mixed with either lemon or vinegar is how you make Greek Salad dressing. Dip some good bread in good olive oil, nice......

Yes, Apollyon, Greek olive oil also keeps food longer, like in pastries and so on. It is just that I am not a big eater of oil, that's why, it's just a matter of taste as you said. I have to dilute it in a dressing.

That's a good idea, Half Greek, thanks for the recipes. I know when I buy Greek salad at the take-out place I go, they put what they call Greek salad dressing, but it does not taste Greek because they are Lebanese people. Mind you, I don't expect them to use Greek olive oil because it has become really expensive nowadays.
