Forum v. Real World

Someone once said something like that a forum is like a small real world, i.e. that the personalities and behaviours we see in the real world are found in a forum.

This does not necessarily mean that how you act or behave in real life, you would do so in the same manner in a forum. Or do people really act or behave in the same manner? What does everyone think?

I personally act no differently in here then I do anywhere else, I don't think I could even if I tried. I think you can tell to some degree what kind of personalities people have in real life from what and how they post on the board.

Ok, serioulsy, but I think it's a little different with a spouse. It's way to personal. I think more of what do friends or coworkers say or think.

I pose this question because I find it very interesting, because it makes one ask oneself, and maybe ask how others might view us. One thing I know from the workplace is that emails sometimes do not really reflect how we would have said things verbally as opposed to in writing, and some people may misunderstand what we wrote. Same thing can be said for posts in a forum, I guess. The thing is that the readers can only read the written words, they cannot see our faces or non-verbal clues, they don't know our personalities, or the context or environment in which we live, etc.

In another forum, a person has said that he never discusses about religion in real life, but boy, isn't he vocal in religious threads!

You brought up a good point about writing versus talking. Sarcasm for example is difficult to detect in writing.

If someone on here is writing something I disagree with, it's easy to argue against it and with the person. In reality if the same person expressed that same opinion verbally and I was listening to it, they might come off as being more passionate about their beliefs, the way they would talk and how they would say it would change the way I might argue back. But there will still be an argument, lol

But I think overall, you can get a basic idea of some characteristics of a person from their posts. If they are more serious type people, or funny, or laid back. That kind of thing.
