| GR Rookie | Inconvenient question Hello, I have a very unconvenient question, but I really like to know what Greek people think about it: Are there in Northern Greece people that say they are Bulgarians? In Edessa, Florina, Kastoria? I know you call them "slavofone greeks", but they say they are Bulgarians. There are two organizations - one pro-bulgarian (Edessa) and one pro-fyromian (Florina). Please, I mean no provocation or something, I just want to know what do you think on this question. |

to be more accurate i will ask a friend of mine who lives in Edessa ,about it... About Florina and Kastoria I have never heard something similar... Now, about slavophone greeks, bulgarians etc.... The only Hellenes (Greeks) who speak a foreign language in Hellas (Greece), are Pomakoi ( a thracian subrace ). They speak a mixture of slavic-bulgarian-turkish-greek dialect...and they are muslims...thats why Turkey is teasing our balls (excuse me for that unpropriate word), for a muslim minority in the eastern Thrace. As you understand there are no slavofone (or whatever language they speak) greeks for me except Pomaks. Last, it is known that Bulgaria and generally our northern neighbors, want a naval exit to Aegean Sea and they give constant try for 2 or more centuries. But they cant have what is not theirs.

| Super Moderator ![]() | Re: Inconvenient question From what i no in kastoria their no Skopians ,Bulgarians, or Albanians. Greece has only 1 minority and its in Thrace. Its a muslim minority, it consists about 28% of the population in the area. Greece is a democracy people can speak any language they want.We do not supress people. In northern Greece 95% of the population is Greek and the 5% are greek too with a ethnic backround. Now if any of are neighbors have dreams about taking northern Greece from us they should wake up fast because this will never happen. It will be hell for any invading force that steps foot in the area, by sunset you will be seeing foreign soldier hanging from lampposts and olive trees, thats if they manage to defeat are military, which will never happen because were armed to the teeth. We Greeks are very nice people and very peaceful people. All is welcome to vist are country. But when it comes to being attacked we.... |

Pomacs are descendants of old soldiers left by Alexander the great to defend Thrace. Every August they gather near Alexandroupolis to share their traditions, especially wrestling, with people of different villages. Originating from ancient Greece, wrestling was adopted as a way for soldiers to keep fit and to maintain a healthy mind and soul. Last edited by TooGreek; 03-22-2008 at 05:31 PM. | |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Inconvenient question Pomaks are the descendants of ancient Thracian tribes which were in turn Hellenized, Latinized, Slavized, Christianized and finally Islamized. Those of them who stayed in the mountains succeeded in remaining ‘pure’ descendants of these ancient tribes and they have many Greek, if not Homeric, words in their vocabulary. Greeks even use anthropometric and ‘blood-group’ research to prove that Pomaks are very different from Turks and are similar to Greeks (Seyppel, 1989:42; Sarides, 1987 and references therein; Hidiroglou, 1991 and references therein). For Greeks, Pomak is a derivative of the Ancient Greek word ‘Pomax’ (‘drinker’) which reflects the Thracians’ known habit of drinking; and Achrjani is a derivative of the ancient Thracian tribe of ‘Agrianoi’ (Seyppel, 1989:48). |

| Admins | Re: Inconvenient question The Pomaks of Thrace are a different issue. Kalas is talking about the Slavs of Macedonia as I can see. They are Slavic populations in the areas of Edessa Florina and Kastoria, their numbers aren't big though. I know that a part of them call them selves "Makedonskis" and another part of them accepted a Greek identity and is assimilated or near assimilation. Personally I don't know about the ones who identify themselves are Bulgarians. Someone who lives in Macedonia can probably help more. |

| GR Elite | Re: Inconvenient question Lets put things in perspective and remember that Slavs did not enter this area until the 5th century. Greeks are the indigineous ones. The only Slavic people that Hellas can truly trust are the Serbs .
