I could sit there and tell you that it didnt exist. It would be false. Truth is the Italians are far more in number and they were was a better population of them here. They migrated before us and in bigger numbers

Now as for being Independent and Born Leaders, No not everyone can be a leader. How can a king win a battle without his Knights.

As for why they lost the war you cant say its because they were all independent and born leaders.

If I can state what I know I gladly will, unfortunately what I know is not on paper . And it wouldn't be wise to expose such things. I am reading a book on the 5 families of New York over ten Greek names have been mentioned. The names were from Organized Crime and also on the side of the law. These Greeks were not made men but they were associates of the Luchese, Genovese, Gambino and the columbo family.

I grew up in the Heart oF Greek NY, and let me say this. There was a element of criime that was way beyond your scope of criminal activity. I have met men that are either in Prison, informants, or currently resting awating there second life.

The organization and territory was to say militirastic. You knew what was safe and was not from the age of 10. You knew who was who and who did what. The organization was a chain of command and truth be told the greeks were running everything. There wasnt a crd game that wasnt theres. Stolen cars to stolen earings. Fenced items liquor Shipments of goods to Greece etc...

Whats the name of the book???

I remember Sakafia mostly from my father mentioning his name and from around Astoria. Didnt he get arrested when Gotti went down?

Re: Greek-American organized crime

You guys might like the 2nd season of the HBO show called "The Wire" There is a mjor subplot involving Greek gangsters (its on DVD). A Greek slicies a Turk in it too I think its in episode 2). One of the writers on that show is a very good Greek-American crime writer, George Pelecanos. Episodes 10 and 11 are very ethnic. A song by Stellios Kazantzidis is being played ver an important plot twist. Heres a smaple dialogue that I remember: "What did you think they were carrying olive oil."

Thanks for the book reference.

Re: Greek-American organized crime

I have to see them. As for the Greek crime. Sure it is out there, my laughs earlier more or less stemmed from the fact it is small time compared to other ethnic groups. In Canada, it appears the Hells Angels have Greeks in them to. I think that is more a Canadian thing as opposed to a Greek thing, but there may certainly be overlap. I think Pankration might now a bit more about this than I do.

Re: Greek-American organized crime

hey guys im new to the forum but i saw what some people wrote , ill tell u why i think they are not as big as the Italy

1. the population of Italy is like 80 million , excluding the ones that live outside
2.Ellines always keep a low key and are slik Crims such as Gus Alex who was one of the Heads 3rd highest in the Chicago Outfit
3. obviously if theres less of us there is 10 times more Italians than us there will be 10 times less Greeks that are Crims

But even though there are Less Ellines who are Crims they are usually either The Brains or the Muscle of the Syndicate , which are the 2 main important parts of being involved in this Lifestyle of a gangster, thats why there were les of them but they were causing trouble for the Itali , afous Valentzas mad the Head of one of the Most noutorios Families Kneel before him with a gun to his head , u dont do that unless u got some Big Arhidia and some kind of back up , anyway that was my pies of mind

(then imaste polli alla imaste Kalli) in anything we do

Re: Greek-American organized crime

In Canada there is some organized crime in Montreal that could be called Greek. Otherwise Greek criminals are on the periphery of organized crime with the one exception: Hephaestion is right, there are Greek, full patch members in the Hell's Angels. In fact, I went to school with a couple of them in the seventies. One recently died of drug abuse. The other is still with the Angels.
